At a train show in Mobile last year or so - I was "inspecting" this fine piece when the vendor noticed me. "Fifty cents", she said. Well, two nice-shape PW Lionel trucks/couplers, which I do use in rolling stock projects when they fit in, for 50 cents? Sure. Of course, the thing is so strangely appealing that I have yet to take the trucks off of it.

I wonder if this was what Jean-Luc Picard went into after he retired from Star Fleet?

This is a wonderful example of "Folk Art." You made a nice find!

- oops, it isn't sunday, but...

after reading another post about using a dull-coat to knock down the "toy look" of some of out lionel plastic trains - I was studying the way the ol' plastic shine and decal ageing was making this boxcar emblem and lettering look kinda "source-y" (shrug, how would you describe it?) anyhow, I gave the boxcar a gentle bath and then shot with a very light coat of krylon 1311 matte finish. I think it looks better

I remember buying that boxcar when it came out. It was my first car with sprung trucks.

While I realize this is not a boxcar but a reefer, I like what you did with it.  I have it and it is my last remaining car from that period.  I keep it because it was my wife's favorite beer while attending Wayne State in Detroit.  I will try the same thing with it to keep it looking good.

I remember visiting York with my granddad in the early 80s. On one of those trips, he picked up several dozen of the early 9800 numbered boxcars and reefers. I was thrilled, and his huge train table finally looked appropriately filled. I loved 'em, the way they sounded rolling with those sprung trucks and angled wheels seemed so much smoother & nicer and you could get more than 20, maybe 30 of them running behind an F3 or 736 magne-berk.   I have inherited these ol' boxcars & reefers, made about 50 years ago. They all have some minor staining or faded-color/plastic patina that developed from 30+ years of storage in newsprint

..Here is a MTH Creamsicle refrigerated boxcar....

There are so many cars that toy trains produced over the years that fall into the "corny"  category - for me - just my personal opinion - (and we know what that's worth, 🤪🤔... nuthin😅) But I find there are still many of them that will cross a boundary from corny that are super cool and desirable. I've just spent 20 minutes searching the interwebz for that creamsicle car... I can't find it for sale anywhere. 🧐 I want one! 👍

Here is one that is a bit unusual.  It is a "fantasy" scheme I am sure, posing as a PRR boxcar celebrating the famous York train show in Pennsylvania but it was beautifully executed.  It is Kline from the period when Kline took over the Marx cars and reproduced them in new schemes.  It mounts the Marx 3/16" scale trucks with (metal) fork type automatic couplers . Its worth looking at more closely to remember what a great job Kline was doing at the time.

I would draw your attention to the wonderful detail that Kline was able to achieve with the Marx dies .  Look at the rivet detail, not just on the car sides but on both sides of the roof stiffening supports.  The rivets are each separated and visible with no overlaps or missed placements.  Kline's lettering is sharp and crisp with no blurring of the lines.  A really top notch job.

Again here on the logo end, you see the lettering is sharp and crisp and the cast detail is deep and very well executed.  I would also note that Kline did a much better job of handling the ends of the door runners than did Marx on the originals who simply had a piece of plastic melted into a "head" to secure the runner end, here the head is covered and neatly obscured.  Great job!

Well since I have very little reference material on Kline production I cannot state when this was made however they (Kline) certainly did a great job on it.

My boxcars for this Sunday, February 25, 2024 are Connecticut Railroad #06611, New York Trumbull & Boston #777, and New York Central #161523 – all MTH products. The first two were expertly custom painted and lettered for me by forum member @Krieglok. The NYC car represents a wood-sided car built in 1919. The video shows New York Central Alco RS-3 #8223 pulling the boxcars with two New York Central cabooses (#19654 and #19877) at the tail end.

The B&O had 14,000+ of their M-26 boxcars starting in 1926, and these 1923 ARA designed cars pretty much were a duplicate of Pennsy’s X-29.  The number of M-26s dwarfs the much more popular B&O M-53 Wagontops that had only 4,376 cars made.  Since I only have one M-26 and four M-53s (plus three C-16), I am always on the look-out for more AtlasO M-26s with the correct paint scheme for the lates 1940s.  Unfortunately, there are not many out there.

Well today I have what I might call a "stand in" for a car I still can't find.  I have been trying to assemble a train of "I Love XX" boxcars for all the states we lived in over my career (7) and have found all but Maryland, which I discovered is very rare in this series and I have not seen one for sale (actually I saw one but it was listed as starting at $200 - too rich for me).  So I found at auction a "stand in" for that "I Love Md" boxcar which is the Maryland boxcar from the 1776 series.  Not perfect but its close. This was produced by Lionel (MPC) as uncatalogued in 1974 and then in the catalogue for 1975-76.

Here is the full side view

The Map side of the car.  Yes that map is correct, the Chesapeake Bay just about cuts Md in half. We lived about 30 minutes south of Annapolis and I worked at the Naval Air Test Center at Patuxent River and we "owned" the airspace over the Chesapeake for flight testing.

Here is the state flag end, Md state flag was a fairly elaborate design reflecting it colonial heritage.
