I am about to add another BPC to my layout. Last time I wired one of these lionel controllers it was a real chore getting the recommended 14AWG wire into the tiny openings. I'm not electrically skilled and looking for advice.

Is it reasonable to use a smaller AWG, like bell wire into the openings on the BPC, then into a terminal strip about 3-6 inches distant, then 14AWG onto to the tracks? Am I asking for real trouble?

Would some sort of PC 'DIN" type device to make the connection work? These openings are painful on the eyes, hands, fingers and back. The forum has a lot smart guys, has someone figured out a trick? Obviously Lionel doesn't offer advice in this area.

Is this an IC Controls BPC or a Lionel version of the BPC?  If I remember correctly (Layout down due to a recent Move), the ICC version had a smaller entrance clamp down than the Lionel version but both were impossible to use with the manual suggested wire size for feeds to the track.  Using a larger gauge (16 or 18 AWG) wire to a terminal block to feed a 12 or 14 AWG wire to go to the track does not work since the "weakest link rule" applies.  The larger gauge wire is carrying the same current as the lower gauge wire  and may result in excessive heat being generated by the 16 or 18 AWG wire depending on your electrrical load.  Many discussions have transpired on this forum as to the wire gauge used to transfer voltage to the track.  You may want to refer to these discussions to determine the gauge of wire actually needed in your circumstance.  Hope this answers your question.
