Hey gang,

I'm looking for some (creative/imaginative) help.  Let me start off by saying that my initial goal is to get a somewhat large layout built so that I can spend time running trains with my 2 sons.  At this point, the focus is having something that is fun for them to enjoy, so scale/realism is less a priority.

Although I have purchased 3 Lionel RTR sets (PA Freight, Thunder Valley, and Polar Express) over the last couple years, I did inherit a ton of engines, freight, passenger cars, buildings, and at least 150' of fastrack.

I have about a 20' x 10' section of my basement that I have all to myself (large open area). I'm not looking to use every square foot of the area, but I do want to start out with a decent sized layout and be able to run (at least) 3 trains at the same time.  Currently, all trains and transformers are conventional and will probably stay that way for awhile.

Here's what I have to work with:

Fastrack: A lot of straights and O36 and O48 curves.  About a half dozen each of O72 and O60 curves.  A couple of O72 and O48 switches and various other fastrack items (accessory, bumpers, etc).  I'm willing to buy more (especially O60/O72), but I would definitely like to use as much as I can of the stuff I already own.

I'd like to have at least 1 track with O60/O72, 1 with O48, and a O36.

Here's one I did up in AnyRail.  I admit, I'm not the most creative person on the planet, so my mock-up looks pretty bland, hence the reason for this posting.

Thanks for you suggestions in advance.

Welcome to the Forum

Your question is a bit general and a matter of personal preference.. You might want to post in and look in the track planning section. Also maybe visit a few public layouts or a show with layouts to get ideas. I would also look at the OGR magazine. Lots of photos and ideas there by talented modelers.

Nothing really wrong with the track plan posted. You may want to leave room for some operating accessories.

It looks like the switches are in the back of the layout.

Can you reach them easily ? If you have problems, that is where its' going to be.

don't get to caught up on planning, you'll find that when you put it together

you will like and dislike portions of it, and probably want to change things.

As Dale said leave room for those buildings and accessories that greatly

enhance the layout. Maybe even pick a theme that will narrow your choices.

Don't be afraid, anything you do can be undone, most of all have fun doing it...

Thanks for the comments, what I neglected to mention is that the layout will be accessible 360 degrees.  It will be away from the rear wall by about 2' or so, so the 2 remote switches will be easily accessible.  Each of the 'boxes' shown is a square foot.  So there will be some room for accessories and buildings, albeit, not a ton of room.
