Lion Chief Plus NJ Central Pacific pulling postwar passenger cars; my Blue Comet:

This engine has a switch giving me the option to run it with a transformer or with a remote unit. Above video shows the train racing around my layout; that switch is on transformer mode. Later, I will set the switch to remote and try out the remote unit. I hope it will run slower and more smoothly using the remote.

I’ll put some nice passenger cars behind it later, turn it into a Blue Comet, make a video of it running, and then post the video here later.

It looks great, Arnold!!

Dont be sorry in the least!  I would be tickled pink if the Pirates made it to the World Series and lost!  1979 was a long time ago, and 1960 was even longer!!  :-)

Jim

I’m glad you got the Power station!  Yes it is big, too big for my use.  I’ll use a flat or paint a power station on my backdrop.

I see someone is really into a healthy dose of fantasy with their trains

I was 9 years old when Mazeroski hit that home run off of Ralph Terry with the ball soaring over Yogi Berra’s head and the ivy covered left field wall, and I may have cried when that happened. LOL.

Mickey Manyle did cry in the Yankee dugout when that happened, and that, more than anything, made me cry.

But now, I’m glad it happened. The Yankees  have had so many triumphs and its great for other teams to have their day in the sun.

Bill Mazerodki was a very solid 2nd baseman, but I compare him to someone like Don Larsen who pitched the one and only Witld Series perfect game for the Yankees in 1956. He, like Mazeroski, was good, but not great; but they both had their glorious moment.

The 2 great players for the Yankees and Pirates back then were Mantle and Clemente.

Mantle was so great: phenomenol Power from both sides of the plate, high batting average, great foot speed, a great drag bunter and he was all about the team, playing with tremendous heart and playing in pain because of osteomyelitis in his legs. Mantle had 3 or 3 home run and batting titles and won the triple crown in 1956.

Clemente had a very high batting average, won 2 or 3 batting titles, had good power, hit a lot of extra base hits, and he may be the best right fielder with the best throwing arm of all time.  I remember like it was yesterday how he would loosen up between pitches by rolling his head to loosen his neck muscles.

You got it right.  I remember hearing people talking about Mazeroski, but didn’t know why.  I was 4.  He was the first Pirate I learned of, but Clemente was my all time favorite.  He won 4 batting titles and missed a fifth by  3 or 4 points to Pete Rose.  It was certainly shocking on New Years Day 1973 to heat on the radio that he had died in the plane crash.  I was 16 then.  Mickey was great too, but I only saw him on occasion on ABC Game of the Week after we got a television.

Thank you for the memories, Arnold!

Okay, I went on a binge I picked up an early ZW 275 watt off eBay.  I found 2 of my MTH 20th 1938 Century cars still need the 5 car set. My local hobby shop had the 6346 Alcoa car with box for 45.00, and thanks to Mario's Trains I landed a MTH 20-20765-1 Santa Fe Proto 3.  Waiting for an MTH 20-20765-3  F3B dummy from Grand Central Trains, also an MTH 20-20765-4 Santa Fe F3A dummy from JR Junction Trains. Now that I have to live on soup and crackers for the next few months, my train shopping is over for a while!

Back to trains. Specifically, the Lion Chief Plus Jersey Central Pacific shown above.

This reply is not for you guys that have mastered Command Control, DCS, using smart phones and blue tooth to control your trains, etc. You are light years ahead of me in this hobby.

This is for those who, like me, are mainly Postwar, Pre-war  and otherwise operate their trains conventionally, and have either rejected, or only dabbled, with more modern ways to run O Gauge trains.

Do yourself a favor and check out Lion Chief Plus.

For the first time, I just ran my brand new Lion Chief Plus steamer using the easy to operate remote unit, and I am ecstatic! Here is a short video showing the prodigious smoke, prototypical smooth and slow speed and performance, sweet whistle and  nice (not awesome) sounds:

Most importantly, this engine did not cost an arm and a leg. The list price in the catalogue is $450; I got it for $389. For me, with my limited knowledge and resources, Lion Chief Plus using remote unit is ideal. Very clear and easy to understand instructions too. I’m totally sold on it.

I also love post war Lionel and MTH Proto 2 snd Proto 3. Proto 1 was great when it was state of the art in the 1990s and early 2000s, and Railking, Like Lion Chief Plus, was and is an affordable option.

There are other great products like 3rd Rail that have amazing detail for the serious modeler.

As I recall, Roberto Clemente was in a charitable mission when he was killed in that plane crash. So tragic for such a good man to die so young.

I'd been hollering that for over a year!   The LC+ engines are fabulous!  The only question is longevity.  Best thing since sliced bread.   IMO

Jim

Arnold, The LC+ Steamer does run really nice indeed!  Thank you for the video!

And, as a final note on the subject, yes Clemente was heading up a mercy mission to earthquake victims in Nicaragua.  He heard supplies weren't getting to where they were needed, so he wanted to see for himself.  The overloaded plane crashed into the sea right after takeoff from San Juan!  Good friend, Manny Sanguillen combed the beaches for weeks looking for anything that would wash in.  And that is all I will say about baseball.

You don’t need to, Mark,  I’ll just keep posting videos of my trains running around Yankee Stadium. LOL

Anyone who hates the Yankees will need to build an O Scale ballpark for the team they love. I would love to see Fenway Park, Forbes Field, Wrigley Field, Veteran’s Stadium, etc., in O Scale!

Not so Cool. I picked up a Harry Potter Lionchief Bluetooth Set on ebay I just opened the box. Cleary the seller had no idea how to ship it. This is how I got  it.  The loco is slightly bent. I need to bend it back into shape without breaking it. Any ideas?

Thats not good.   can probably straighten it out but I would surely contact the seller first!

Jim

Santa Postman just brought me an AF tinplate Zephyr that is a different variation from the

more common ones.  As you can see in the photos, the engine has a rear truck like the Comet

engine, and the coaches have 4 windows, also like the Comet, whereas the more common zephyr

coaches have six windows. The observation only has a rear truck. Otherwise it looks like the common

one. This must be specific to this set as the comet did not have an observation. Also something

I have never seen on the cheap sets, the IMG_20180216_115803IMG_20180216_120005IMG_20180216_120129IMG_20180216_120230loco has a whistle.

Contact the seller for sure. That is not what you paid for. If you don't get satisfaction then go to Ebay directly.

Good luck

It gets worse I took it by my local train store to check it out. It doesn't run all the smoke leaked out of the circuit board when we tried to run it.

Noah, that doesn't look too bad. The seller is an idiot for packing it that way but those main rods and crossheads will bend back just fine. Take some good photos and tell the seller you'll try to fix it but if it breaks you want you're money back. That way youre covered. in the pics I don't see anything that is actually broken or bent that cant be bent back.

Ask the seller to accept the return and be sure to ask them to pay the return shipping.  But before you do anything, re-check the Ebay ad that you bought it on.  Make sure that you didn't miss any disclaimers, etc.

As a buyer you have pretty good clout on Ebay.  I have had a few less than stellar pieces come to me and usually I was able to get a partial refund if I wanted to try and fix the item myself.  The last big item I bought was the Lionel Nuclear Reactor.  The description said that it was working properly.  The actual item hardly worked when I got it.  I was able to get a very substantial partial refund because I wanted the item and am working on trying to get it operational.

Picked up some needed extras at auction today.  Horses, cows and chickens... plus several post-war operating accessories.

newspaper!  Found it inside the building tucked under the mechanism.  I hear that's hard to come by.  Also got a gantry crane, barrel loader and whistle station (all post-war).  The most interesting find was a couple of modified Right of Way Industries stock cars with sound card mods.  So here is the menagerie, not including Philly flyer loco that is on the kids test track.

My menagerie

Went to the Winter Cactus Meet in Phx yesterday with nothing in mind but a few pieces of rolling stock for my 027 and O scale coal trains when something caught my eye!  I have been looking for these MTH Northern Pacific F-3s in 2 tone green for a couple of years.  These are the 2007 PS-2 release and they run as good as they look.  The best part is the seller had 2 cars from the 2007 5 car passenger set and he threw them in for $20 each!

Now the search for either decals or the other passenger cars begins.
