Received this handsome U30C from a Forum member yesterday and put it on the test track today. Great sounding horn and different from the horn on the Santa Fe U28c behind it.
Railking PRR Alco. Nothing like an Alco starting up. Love that sound. These Railking engines are pretty no frills, but I just adore them, the price is right and now I have a passenger PRR diesel.
Here it pulls in and goes through the PSA cycle.

Should I go Pennsy or Conrail?
We have three Pennsy trains already, so getting another would be consistent with what we already have on hand, but Conrail elicits memories from my childhood, and this would be my train. So ... decisions, decisions.

I think I'm leaning Pennsy, just to keep it consistent (forgot that I also have that Williams PRR FM Trainmaster). But the Conrail is calling to me ...
picked up 40 shares of Pennsylvania Railroad stock! Now all I have to do is sit back and wait for the money to come in!

My locomotive servicing area is almost complete. Grabbed a coaling tower for cheap. Now just waiting on my MTH sand tower. On the old Lionel water tower, I may paint it, slap a PRR sticker on it, drill a hole in the top and slip a red blinking nano Just Plug LED in the top.
Some ninny was selling the Santa Fe tower on eBay as being O scale and it definitely isn't. It's a bit on the smaller side but similar size to the Marx towers. I may put a PRR sticker on it and keep it on the layout anyways. Or sell it on eBay and hope to break even.
And still debating Conrail vs Pennsy.

Santa postman just brought a french Jep two unit streamliner. Finally was able to resist taking
something apart the moment I received it. No action when I first put it on the track. A little
WD40, cleaned the wheels, a little contact cleaner on the commutator. The light came on
and it started moving barely. Finally got it to do about a half a lap, very slowly, then it started
smoking so I shut it off. I have to do a bit more research, somewhere in the back of my mind
I am thinking these may be 20 volts.
Learned something today, I always thought JEP and Joustra were two different french trainmakers.
Turns out JEP stands for Joustra en Paris.

Illinois Railway Museum, used to live a few miles away many years ago. They have/had
an early Burlington Zephyr. Great condition, even all the linen and silverware and china in
the dining car.

Yes, 20 Volts. My JEP 222 runs on the ZW at it's 18V but it runs much better on my Z at 24V. Mind you 18 or 24 on those dials ain't exactly 18 or 24 at the rail or motor so the higher voltage rating of the Z is a good thing . If you have a V, a Z, or an R (or something prewar similar) it will run a bit better. OF course the cleaning and oiling will help as well.
Got a pretty good deal on these from Mr. Muffins - thanks guys!!! These are my first Atlas engines. They have nice detail and a sweet paint job. Luckily I've moved out some old conventional stuff lately that I know I will never use again... need the storage room!!!

Use a duck bill pliers. Do not straighten it with your fingers.

That'll work great. Sweet little railcar too. I think I was watching that one or one like it for a while and was tempted. How are the axle bearings? The ones on my 222 were worn out. I haven't done anything about them yet, but I may. If the bearings are really worn, that could contribute to it being a growler when it runs.
we will see about bearings when it is running, no noise in the bit it has run so far, there was a three car
unit on eBAY last week, blue and white that I was watching. I was in till about $250, but
it topped out at mid $400.s
I got lucky on my 222 and landed it for $75 or so plus shipping. It needs rods and a few parts, but was a decent deal I think.
Got this at my local train store. I acquired this month the O gauge and then the HO gondola. The colors and lettering on the Lionel are beautiful and so crisp.

I am a fan of the PRR and have always liked the keystones. That being said, I'd go for the Conrail. It is more colorful and it operated in the same vicinity as the PRR, so you'd have some variety. One of your reasons for going with the Pennsy was to be consistent... to quote Ralph Waldo Emerson, "consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds"

Thanks Mark, so am I, If it wasn't for you and Dave, I wouldn't have. With Dave posting it here and FrankTrain seeing it just made my day! Then when Frank threw in the little extras sure mad my week! Thank you to all of you! What a great group of guys!

I like the Penny.
But I also never cared for Conrail at all. The name and scheme was a contest, and I was a graphic artist then. When I saw the first one roll by, I thought it was an actual joke...a "con"
No joke. Amtrack and "the Worm" are right there with it, and though I love the shield logo, you may never see U.P. yellow on my layout.
I think I'm good with everything else out there.
...and hopefully it is another year or two before I admit that again

Pennsy never had E33's (only the similar E44's, which had a higher nose before the cab) - they went from Virginian, to New Haven, then to the Penn Central, after PRR was merged. Conrail had them and painted them like this one.

Even though I'm not a stickler for realism, I did figure that out in reading about the E33's ... and to be honest, it may play a factor anyways. The ultimate goal is to run some CSX, because that's what we see a ton of around here (Florence, SC has a CSX Division Office), so the progression from Pennsy to Penn Central to Conrail to CSX would work on the layout (with Amtrak thrown in for good measure). I suspect I couldn't go wrong either way, but the detailing on the Conrail appears to be nicer (the voltage warnings and sand fill placards). Pennsy definitely has the better logo, which I believe Conrail may hold the rights to (at least they sell merch from all the railroads that I believe were incorporated under the Conrail umbrella). Still on the fence, but good comments everyone ... even if @Apples55 called me a hobgoblin
