I'm a day late and a dollar short (by a year) on this topic and I don't have any expertise (newbie here) to add......but I do want to know:

I have a Railking SW-9 with PS2 that I want to convert to battery power for a backyard layout. If the electronics are removed and replaced with battery and dcc decoder (that has sound), will it run on un-powered track?

Thanks,

MWA

Yes it will work. Go to www.cvpusa.com   Everything you need is there. Just seems to be a huge expense to invest in one railking engine that I assume still works as is.  You will need to mount everything in a trailing boxcar. If you are going to go this route. Then 3 rails isn't a requirement. Nor is tight radius track.  You may want to look into a 2 rail engine and rolling stock.

Another twist.

Some of the PS2 and PS3 MTH engines/locomotives, as delivered, are 3/2 locos. They will operated either three rail or two rail.  Assuming two rail operation is DC.

My Russian decapod.

Note the wheel isolation/plastic bushings, for two rail operation. Information in the owners manual, part of the 3/2 loco package.

We had done a couple of threads on Radio Controlled operation with DC power packs.  Here is a link to one of the threads.
