Good Day,
Since Lionel has these features in S Scale......................I'm curious, Can Lionel's Legacy Command Control and Lionel RailSounds be installed in Overland Model 2-Rail Diesels like their SD70ACe?

I don't see why it can't .. Lionel has changed there electronics to make them smaller in the last 2 years .The main board has the receiver, motor driver and the smoke control all in one board. Next is the the sound board.. And smoke unit.. And a few lighting pcbs.
The only issiue is your gonna have to buy a af for the sound board.. Cause it's not buyable with out a trade in..
Agreed- the only trouble is there are no wiring diagrams for Legacy locomotives available yet, and Lionel is the only source for the circuit boards for now. Adding TMCC with RailSounds might be the way to go for now, mainly thanks to the products (complete with manuals and full documentation!) available from The Electric Railway Company.

It depends. I don't know how Legacy communicates, but TMCC would be very difficult. You would need to find a suitable location on the outside of the unit to put the radio antenna or maybe figure out how to use the brass as the antenna; if that is even possible.
Doesn't Lionel sell command locomotives for S? I don't know why it would be harder than O, just connect to one of the rails is my understanding. Between the bases and the locomotives, TMCC and Legacy communicate the same.
I bet it would work if you had a donor unit.
I believe you can use a simple wire for an antenna. I've read that handrails on steamers are used if they can be isolated from the metal body.
The products from ERR look great. Do they include full documentation for their products? I would like to know stuff like power output, amp capacity, and of course thorough wiring diagrams with each outputs capacity and functionality.
I tried a simple test using an older TMCC base and a wire laid next to the track (not connected to the track) and it worked great! So I believe some issues can be worked thru depending on the RR.
TMCC and Legacy use essentially the same system, base to engine. The difference is in the handheld to base communication. While you can buy the earlier modular Legacy boards I don't think Lionel is selling the compact boards yet. For sound you will have to settle for RS4 like all the other third parties. As for the antenna issue I would guess if you insulated the body from the frame you could use the body as the antenna. This technique has been done on some all metal tenders. It can be done but you have to be familiar with how the systems work as there are no books to reference.

Joe, you can run pretty much any single or dual-motored locomotive with the ERR stuff, I've done a bunch of upgrades with various TMCC boards from them. They have the small Mini Commander 2 for little stuff, and the full driver boards for DC or AC powered locomotives.
Have you checked out The Electric Railroad site? You can download the installation manuals for the products there and see exactly what you're getting.
Yes John, thank you.
A little while back I was looking into them. I ended up having some heavy interference issues with my mainly DCS 2Rail layout. I abruptly steered away and didn't have the resources at that time to invest just to try and work them out.
Now, with the ability to remove the TMCC signal from the rails, I've been dabbling back into it. I've got a few engines now and a 3rd rail with the ERR system that is very nice. I wasn't aware that they existed and thought it was part of Lionel back then.
I was mainly looking at them for G scale use where flywheels are few and larger amp draws are standard. I still have not invested in an extra board to try. I have some TMCC boards around that I don't even know how to wire. The speed control was so poor that I ripped it out of a 3rd rail Allegheny without keeping track of the wiring. I was thinking I'd never use the system anyways.
I was looking at the manual for this 3rd Rail engine and it's adjustable speed control to match either Lionel or MTH speed steps. Sounds cool.
I also like the fact that the engine automatically adjusts it's sound for labor or drift.
