Northern Pacific's passenger trains were such beautiful trains. Did Lionel ever make a set in "O" gauge like American Flyer? Aluminum cars and all. Don.

They made a set of the green cars in 1997 or so.
The cars were the 15" variety and all dome cars if I remember correctly.
As for engines, they made two sets of F3's. One was in NP freight colors and the other was in the passenger scheme.
Yes, they did make a set with F3's and aluminium cars...loco's are beautiful but the car mix was terrible - a baggage car and 4 full domes I think..might have been some add-ons too. It doesnt have the grace of AF's set or the real North coast Limited- forget the full domes..you need the regular Budd domes . An O27 version was made too with a full set of cars but no diesels (you had to go buy KLine Alcos to match) - just a 2-6-4.

Don, Williams made some PA's years ago that had beautiful paint but don't look as nice as the other scale PA's on the market. Its unusual that neither Lionel or MTH hasn't produced them in all these years...
That North Coast Ltd was one of my 'dream set's' when I was a boy!
Lionel had a F3 A/B locomotive set with a matching 4-car set of 16" long vista domes in the 1997 Heritage catalog. The Locomotives were cataloged under 6-18131 and the cars were 6-19166.

Don, I posted a video of one in the Christmas forum. I'll look to see if I have a picture since the video quality is bad. I also have an email in to the owner of the train. It was running at the Northern Pacific Railway Museum's Toy Train Christmas. Have you been to the museum in Toppenish?
I take that back, that one was steam. It looks like my Milwaukee Road with green cars. They had a variety of NP trains so I'll ask the guy when I talk to him.
Yes we have been to the museum. I lived there at one time, many moons ago. Also lived in Mabton. Raised mint. I remember seeing the passenger train go by a number of times. Also climbed all over a long line of articulated steamers as they were going to their last round up, don
This is my favorite AF set. I normally don't buy fantasy engines, but when Williams came out with the NP Alco PA back in about 1996, I bought one.
In 2007 I got a set of MTH passenger cars to run with it.
Here is a video I found of the engine.
Pretty sure Lionel made Dummy A-units to go with the A-B for both NP color schemes as well.

Thanks for the video of the Williams NPs Gerry. You can really see the 'high water' effect that the undersized fuel tanks give!
Where was the headlight I wonder…..
I'm kinda surprised no one has mentioned Bill Spalding and his Northern Pacific hi-rail Lionel layout....
As far as I know, Lionel made one set in 1997 for premium O gauge and one in 1990 for O-27. Clearly Bill did some excellent custom paint work on his rolling stock and motive power to get the overall best for his railroad, even on collectible postwar Lionel aluminum cars and F-3's...
I agree that this is a great looking train. I have been tempted to buy a AF version. I collect 3-D slides that were taken 1948-1950s, and 3 weeks ago, I got one of this train stopped at a station (only passenger cars showing). I also have a 3-D slide of the obs. car on the SantaFe Chief with a guy posing next to it, dated 1957.
4 domers with addons in the baggage, coach, and observation in the Loewy green aluminum cars. The add-0ns are very difficult to find.
