Prototype Data: With the Depression in full swing for American consumers in 1931, Chevrolet stressed the durability and affordability of its automobiles to the budget-conscious consumer. One ad boasted, Of all Chevrolets since 1911, 72% are still in use, aimed at the growing number of Americans that could not afford to buy a new car every few years. Returning in 1931 after a one-year absence was the Sports Cabriolet. This stylish 2-door convertible sported a rumble seat, stone guard; wire spoke wheels, new body panels and molding, and a heavier frame and longer wheelbase. The 1931 Chevrolets were named the "Independence" series, and these beautiful Harley Earl designed, Cadillac-style cars propelled Chevrolet to number one in sales by the end of the year. On November 25, 1931, the 8-millionth Chevrolet rolled off the Michigan assembly line.
