The E8 excursion to Altoona next month is now cancelled thanks to Amtrak. They are refunding ticket holders. But, the New River Train might operate this year due to pressure on Amtrak from the WV governor and Collis P. Huntington.

Thought the new river train running this fall was already a done deal?

NOTHING involving current dealings with Amtrak's new CEO is "a done deal". That PRR E8 excursion even already had a "signed contract" with Amtrak, and now you se how THAT worked out.

I would not hesitate to let AMTRAK or any of  my elected officials know  my displeasure about Amtrak's moves regarding Excursions and hauling of Private Varnish. I think it is a ploy on their part. You have got to be kidding me that they have not covered "allocated costs" in the past or don't have the ability to do so. Its a crying shame if you ask me. No wonder more and more people are getting fed up with Amtrak. Time for the Feds to discharge or dismount.,

New river train has some major obstacles to overcome to run this year.   I’m not saying it’s not going to happen but let’s say some financial mountains will have to be moved from a solid source.

Well, there are railroads that are running long distance excursions this year. UP, RBMN, and TVRM. Those are guaranteed to run since Amtrak is not involved in any way. Grand Canyon, Steamtown as well. The Durbin and Greenbrier Valley in Elkins, the Potomac Eagle in Romney. Cuyahoga Valley in Ohio. All of those railroads have excursions longer than 10-20 miles. Arkansas and Missouri has long train trips behind Alcos and with historic coaches, some with open windows. I guess the convention people now have to find their own way to Altoona. And the E8’s now will most likely be parked indefinitely. They could always ride the Pennsylvanian to Altoona.

In the big picture of things, does the general public really care if Amtrak or anybody else run excursions?   I have three answers:

1.  No

2.  Hades, No.

3.  Hell, No!

While much of what you say may be true, that doesn't preclude those who have a great deal of interest from expressing our misgivings. Trust me, I have many mixed emotions about AMTRAK.

I haven't been to the club meetings in a while, and I am sorry to hear about their financial problems. Seems like about all of the Clubs and Organizations are coming to a close nowadays. I saw in our local paper where Elder-Biermann is gone now. I just hope they didn't get hacked and someone stealing money from their system...Like what has happened to the Strasburg Railroad......
