Has anyone cracked the code of how to mount an electrocoupler on the early 3rd Rail tenders with the upside down detent? Maybe someone found a coupler or perhaps came up with an adapter?

I turn the casting with the detent upside down and mount the electrocoupler on the flat side. Some sheet styrene is needed to shim the coupler to the proper height.
You do lose the self-centering feature of the coupler but we switch cars frequently with these locomotives and have not found the lack of self-centering to be a problem.

Hmm... That's worth exploring, I'll take a look at that option. Maybe I'll make myself a new mounting bracket that doesn't have the bump for my test, that way I can go back to the original if I don't like it.
When I asked 3rd Rail about mounting them, Scott said the tech rummages around and uses some mount from older tenders, when he can find one, to mount the electrocoupler. We stayed with the manual one as no way was found to mount it and no older piece was available from 3rd Rail.
I may fabricate a piece, I'll see how difficult it is. I hate to hack up the existing mount as I may have to stick with it.
I'd like to do something about the GN S-2 coupler we upgraded ... the tab almost hits the center rail as it hangs down low.
Well, if I figure out how to make one, we can work something out. I have no idea how it'll work out...
I created a mount for the electrocoupler. A bit of hacking and filing, but it works, has the centering spring, and is the right height. The aluminum spacer with the ears makes it the right height and also engages the T-pin to self-center the coupler.

GRJ: What make and model electrocoupler do you show in your pictures? I need to purchase a new one for my 3rd Rail Super Hudson's PT tender which at present has a Kadee installed.... It is not reliable in towing lobster claws around the layout.
Well... It was just one from my parts box, it had the smaller attachment end that worked in this application. I don't have a part number...
Looks like this mount.
It appears to be this one, the length is right.
