Although I'm no longer into HO, to see what this set has to offer is interesting. First off, the sound is nice with 4 chuffs per revolution, DCC also a plus. Watching it in action, it looks to have nice slow speed operation with a top speed that doesn't throw it off the rails. Although its not breaking the sound barrier, one thing I've noticed with most engines not equipped with momentum capability or speed control is the limited range with the remote before blast off. I know some enthusiasts, my Grandsons included, love to see the train racing around the layout at warp speed. Unless you're Gomez Adams, I doubt most want to see it fly off the layout onto the floor. Not for that price. I'd like to see lower gearing across the board, in any gauge or scale. No need to crawl like a Shay but a reasonable compromise. My solution has been a variable transformer set at a lower setting. Although this works, it makes the set included power pack something not used.
This was an informative review & I think if just starting in the hobby considering HO, this could be my first purchase. I complement Eric for testing the waters to give us a look at another side of the hobby.
