I was really happy to learn that Scott Mann was licensing the ERR components after Lionel decided to completely drop the line.

I just acquired a board gutted MTH E33 and wanted to just add all the ERR boards to make it functional again (still needs lighting and stuff too).  So, I went over to the 3rd Rail site and by the time I had picked the 3 ERR boards I need, it worked out to almost $260.

I am in no way taking a shot at Scott. He's doing a great service to all of us by giving us an upgrade path and he deserves to make a return on his investment.

It's been a number of years since I've considered an upgrade.  Is this the new "normal"?

Almost seems to be cheaper to buy a Lionel beater and cannibalize it for the TMCC and Railsounds?

Thanks for your time,

Fred

Fred, I'm curious as to why you need 3 boards.  The MTH E33 should only need a Cruise Commander kit at $130 and a RailSounds Electric kit at $90.  I'm guessing you included in your order an R4LC radio board.  This board is included in the Cruise Commander kit.  The website does not state that fact.

Good thing you are doing a steam engine. Along with costs above you need something to generate chuff and a tether all not included with ERR. Also you couplers may have to be replaced if this was a PS2 engine. Even in the best of times ERR cost more than a PS2 upgrade where most everything is included in the price. Now its almost double for the same feature set.

Bob,

Yeah, that would be the reason!  Now the price seems a little more manageable.

Thank you for the information.

The ERR Steam RailSounds boards include chuffing. The kit includes a cherry switch, magnet, and tether to synchronize the chuffing.

Most of my steam engines purchased in late 80’s and early 90’s cost $1000.00. You can now pick them up for $300-$400.   I add a can motor and add cruise commander set up and still stays way below the original price. To me it’s a good deal. I don’t like shelf queens collecting dust never to run again. Bringing an old outdated engine up to today’s standards is quite rewarding. The good thing about ERR is you can start with the cruise commander and add sound at a later date as funds become available. Run silent, it’s pleasing to the ears.

Well, sort of.  They include one magnet, in order to have four chuff/rev, you need four magnets.  Also, the reason I developed the Chuff-Generator was the PITA it is to get four magnets on the driver and have them actuating the reed switch.  Oh, and the chuff switch doesn't do anything for chuffing smoke, that requires additional hardware.
