I recently reconfigured my layout from 027 to Fastrack and have around 20 remote switches. I disconnected the controllers as I was going to use the new Base 3 to operate them. Now with its delay I'm wondering if there is something else I can use in the meantime. At the moment all I have is conventional engines, Not much fun to have to crawl on your layout to route your trains.

Classic CAB1 and TMCC base, and you would have a backup for waiting on the base3.
Also, to be clear- you have command switches?
Lionel used to make manual, remote (meaning the wired remote), and then command (TMCC receiver + wired remote) switches. Later they dropped the middle tier and only make manual or command switches.
The way to know- besides product number and box labeling is if your switches have the program button that only exists on command variants.

There's also a substantial difference in price. These are list prices from Lionel for O36 switches:
Manual : $55
Remote: $95
Remote & Command: $130
Does Lionel even produce the remote without command anymore? I thought they dropped the remote switches without command capability.

Even if not producing/selling new from Lionel, they is still stock available from retailers, eBay, etc. and best to be aware they are not the same.
That's certainly true David.
These are 6-81949 LH Remote/Command Switches and do have a switch remote button on them.

So again, they are "command" switches, and thus accept a TMCC/Legacy RF signal from a TMCC or Legacy base, and thus can be triggered using TMCC commands.
The baseline or oldest version of that is the CAB1 and TMCC base.
Next tier or version is CAB-1L and Base-1L.
Then 990 Legacy CAB2 and matching Legacy base.
Then CAB3 (app) and BASE3.
