As far as I'm concerned I would like to see a bigger wider view.  I wish people would zoom OUT rather than zooming in so tightly that you only see 1 car at a time.  I like to see some of the layout in the picture or other trains as they pass.  In real life you don't just see an area of say 10 feet unless you have tunnel vision.  So, zoom OUT and let us see your trains, layout, scenery, etc.

The lens about 1-1/2" up from the surface, or about 6 scale feet is, I think, most realistic.  And I prefer to see trains coming at me, rather than passing by or going away.  That said, of course one has to vary their shots to maintain interest.  For example, an overhead shot into a tunnel, as in the movie North by Northwest, is a good break.
