"HONGZ" stands for HO scale, N scale, G scale, and Z scale.

Post your non-O scale stuff here!

I've played around with every scale except G, but I've got the opportunity to pick up a used Bachmann set. It's the (poorly named) "Thunderbolt Express" freight. 😁 Since I have no experience with this stuff, what should I look for as far as getting decent operation from the 4-6-0?

Any other thoughts regarding this scale are more than welcome, too. Thanks!

The shop My dad and  I owned sold  at least 3 or 4 hundred sets and at least  150 ten wheelers , The  initial models were plagued by bad gears ( at the time readily available from Bachmann ) and a lot of their details were soft plastic But easy enough to replace and repair.   Their Spectrum series was a good quality and corrected many of the issues, but 4 times the price ( worth it) since the driving force behind the G scale and On30  trains passed Steam has gone out of  line.  From what I have seen of your work, you should have no problems , if you can find the parts

This thing arrived yesterday; it shows knuckle couplers and metal rails, so it's a "newer" release, although I'm not at all sure of the actual vintage.

It's much BIGGER than I expected; quite a bit larger than Standard Gauge.   It's also of a much better quality than I thought it would be; less of the "toy" and more of a "model". Things are put together with screws, so disassembly is possible. Speaking of which...

How does one go about taking apart the engine? Is there a particular sequence? Iyt sounds like there is some large loose part in there (a weight, perhaps) and it definitely needs some cleaning and lube.

Any suggestions are welcome.

Well...since there doesn't seem to be any interest in this, I'll wrap things up.

This is apparently an example from 1990-'94, judging by the nylon gearing. Got the engine running pretty well, after lots of cleaning; added a washer/spacer on both sides of the main driver rod assemblies, as the main rod was contacting one of the connecting "pins" on the other drive wheels and causing a hitch.

Cars are nice enough; track...not so much. I'm sure there are better options out there.

That's pretty much it.

Hi I have many G scale German engines they run very well and run on DC power Supplies. also some of those engines had built in sound effects that are really cool pretty sure you would like them if you heard a engine running! I have mostly steam engines and originally satrted with a starter set which consists of a circle of track dc transformer a couple of cars' and a small steam engine!

I am deep into G scale/gauge one with both electric powered and live steam powered locomotives.  I use LGB's track both indoors and outdoors.  I have locomotives from LGB, Kalamazoo, Bachmann and Aristocraft and live steam locomotives from Aster and Bassett Lowke.   You can get the later Spectrum drive chassis for the 4-6-0 and install it into any of the older locomotives to improve its running.  Those chassis have metal side rods, metal gears and run nearly silent while in operation.  AD

------------I think there id a G forum, the guys there might be able to help with parts and upgrades

Indeed there is.

I guess because the Bachmann 4-6-0 has been around for so long, there's lots of interesting info about them. Because this is running well enough, I will no doubt just keep it "as is", without any major upgrades.

I have always been a bit curious about G scale; it's kinda cool working with such BIG pieces and the quality is, as I mentioned, better than I expected.

PS: I haven't taken any pictures of the G stuff, so this will have to do...
