"HONGZ" stands for HO scale, N scale, G scale, and Z scale.

Post your non-O scale stuff here!

Hi guys,

I'm new to G scale and only have a couple locomotives that just run DC. I recently purchased a USA GP-38 unit at a show for a great price, but it does not have sound or smoke.

I'm just running DC, but as I start building a layout I was wondering what recommendations the G scale crowd would offer for a operating system.  DCS, DCC, battery? What brand etc etc.

My next plan is to have a smoke unit and sound added to this GP-38 and i want to beable to have a system that will operate those.

Thanks!

Phoenix offers really nice sound systems, as does ESU Lok Sound.  You can go with a couple different DCC systems in G scale, onboard battery power with RC control such as the Evolution, RCS or Airwire.   If your doing a large outdoor layout, I would highly recommend going with onboard battery power.  Keeping track clean enough for track powered DCC is quite the chore.  And being that you just getting started, now is the time to make the switch.   RLD Hobbies is an excellent source of the stuff needed to do the work yourself, or they can do the work for you.   He is at the huge G scale show on the east coast this weekend, wait a few days as he has a long drive home to Illinois.  Mike the Aspie

There's plenty of examples on Utube. Do a search for what you wish to see. Most of these videos below are older versions.

Here's one running under MTH's DCS

Here's phoenix sound

Here's an ESU locksound

newer MTH PS3

There's videos of Aristo's REV system but I think they would be tough to get now that they're out of business.

There's also Soundtraxx versions and all with track or battery power options.

Battery is great for outdoor garden layouts, it's  the way to go. My only complaint is the high cost. When I was at the Amherst show there was a guy who is well known selling his battery upgrades for a USA  Diesel engines and it was north of $600 for the conversion.  Not including the control system. Not being electrically handy I would need him to wire and set up the loco for battery operation. $$$$
