Grade Crossings.....

Seems that the topic of creating roads and highways has been discussed over and over (new forum will be great due to archives) but there has been no talk that I can find or remember regarding grade crossings. I am using 0-27 tubular track and need to add at least 3 grade crossings. The catch is that all 3 have to be located on curved sections of track. I have seen the videos and such regarding pouring plaster or WS Smooth It but my question is how to keep the plaster or Smooth It from running all over from beneath the rails? The track is sitting on Woodland Scenics foam roadbed.

Man I knew I should have gone back to the old grass indoor/outdoor carpeted toy look!

I used modeling clay, then painted it black, and added some very small ballast as a texture. It doesn't seep under the rails, and can be carved to make flange ways for the wheels.

If you want wood crossings, ScaleUniversity.com has them in straight and curved. I suppose you could also cover them with a skim coat for asphalt or concrete.

I've made good simple asphalt-looking grade crossings on 0-27 curved track with tarpaper (roofing felt). Fit it up close to and between the rails. No problems with flange depth between the rails if you press it down to the base of the rail. A tarpaper roadway leading up to a rail crossing can be stuck down with silicone caulk. This construction is easier to re-do it if you decide to reposition your roads or tracks later. You may be able to get large scrap pieces of tarpaper from a construction project, instead of buying an entire roll.

I'm not sure if you can tell, but these are on a curved section. They are painted foam board glued to the side of the middle rails. I made a paper template to get the curve right, then traced it on the board.
