First, you'll need a 12v AC wall wart, one that's screwed together rather than glued. Pop it open and make sure you have room for the screw head and wires, and remove the transformer.

Then, search out the dimensions for a "NEMA Plug" (this will give you the dimensions for the ground lug relative to the hot and common blades).

Then lay out the hole location and drill a hole to clear the threads on the 8-32 screw, drill the hole in the housing.

Then, take your brass tubing and cut a piece .875" long. Round the end over a bit to ease insertion.

Tap the other end of the tubing with the 8-32 tap.

Then, cut the "output" wire of the transformer on the side that feeds the outside of the barrel connector. Solder in a short pigtail and crimp the eyelet on the end.

Then place the eyelet on screw and tighten the screw through the body and into the tube.

Make sure everything is insulated and put the wall wart back togther, you're done!

I realized I didn't take any pics of the actual wiring but that's simple enough...connect the ground lug to the wire that goes to the outside of the barrel connector.

Materials:

12v AC wall wart with appropriate barrel connector to fit the command base

3/16" x .014" wall thickness brass tube (K&S rack at nearly any hobby shop)

8-32 machine screw

Crimp-on wire ring thingy (could be omitted - a loop of wire under the screw would work fine too)

8-32 tap and tap handle

It works PERFECTLY!

No, not legacy base. As that is current production I'd say getting a wall wart out of Lionel would bexpect fairly easy for that one.

I meant to post the wall wart for the 990 Legacy set, but search brought up the wall wart (9VAC) for the 1L set. That may be useable, but honestly...it's Unavailable too.

The parts number for the 990 wall wart is 620 4202 000 and appears nowhere in parts. The search for 990 brings up the 1L wall wart.

Wow!... talk about price gouging!! Looks like it's a seller's market.

What do you mean? Price of what?

Oh I see. Ebay. You cannot consider Ebay to any standards. Many of the sellers on Ebay are opportunists looking for the uninformed, poor souls who need a part to complete a fairly expensive investment, collectors who value "having it" above value, and so on. I don't think it's gouging unless it affects your health or safety.

Oh that one the pink ruler guy. He has it listed for $28 the other day. He over charges on everything. I do not see how he survives. I guess because of uniformed people like mentioned before

At some point here I am going to sell my 26MHz old school CAB-1 and Command Base. I am never going to get around to writing software for it, MTH will probably get around to adding TMCC some day.

God forbid Lionel should write an Android app that would let me control engines from that old android Nook and their WiFi module.  I bought a CHiP computer because it had WiFi built in, then Rasberry Pi came out with something. Then I found this open source PLC with antenna and everything on Amazon for like $80 but of course someone would have to write the software.

Fair warning, the CAB-1 the face was botched up by the previous owner, and it has the rubber ducky antenna. I saved the crappiest of the four that I owned.

I'm aware of that solution (learned about it from that very post, researching my options!) but it seemed clunky and I'd have to go buy both a wall wart AND a data plug I'd still have to wrap a wire around the screw on my wall plate...just wasn't appealing to me. I could see it if you have a permanent layout but we recently moved and I have a lot of work to do before building a layout, wanted something I could just plug and unplug like the original.
