The original Sting Ray was conceived and designed by Pet Brock of GM in 1957.  He and a couple of others got together with Zora Duntov (who was behind 327 cubic inch motor with the 30/30 Duntov cam, one of the best engines GM EVER produced) to come up with the Sting Ray car.  A couple were made and raced at Sebring and LeMann.  The second generation of Corvette was loosely modeled after their original design.   Stingray has been attached to Corvettes ever since 1963.

Actually, the "stingray designation was dropped after 1976 because of its dismal HP rating brought on by emission controls.

Things deterorated fast up to 1982 when the sad 182 HP "boulevard" car (its then new moniker) wasen't even available with a manual transmission.

The Stingray label returned in 2014.
