I am putting some HO stuff on a 12" wide shelf along the wall to add depth perception. How far apart minimum should the two tracks be assuming 18" curves? Thank you for your time.

18" radius curves do limit the size of running full scale passenger cars and auto racks, but if that is not a concern, I'd look at about 3" spacing between tracks. Might be worthwhile to simply do a test curve to see what the largest equipment you plan on running does on those curves. When I had an HO layout, my minimum mainline radius was 24".
