Why is one brush on Rivarossi HO engines, at least those with motor P-231-009, made of a wire mesh and the other brush made of carbon? Was the idea behind the wire mesh brush to keep the commutators clean? Does it work? Is it essential to use one? Can they be run without harm with two carbon brushes instead? Do they run any better with two carbon brushes? Thank you.

You are correct, the one wound wire brush is meant to clean the armature, you can replace it with a carbon brush with no adverse effects. It is not going to make it run any better, it is still a 3 pole motor. Marklin uses the same set up. Must be a European thing.
Thanks Chuck. First time I've seen this. Good to know two carbon units are OK to use. Maybe a European thing or a 70's thing? Some thing. Anyway, thanks again for your help.
