We recently traveled to Jackson Mississippi.  We stayed at the Hilton downtown right next to the train station on Capitol Ave.  Unexpectedly our 4th floor room was just above the elevated RR tracks with a perfect view of KATY,  NS, and CN.  At least 30 trains a day sometimes two at once.  Why they all converge on this spot is unknown to me.  Maybe someone with local knowledge can give us some history.  Stay at this hotel if you are in town or just a great place to view from trackside.  The windows were super insulated so not to keep you up at night and no grade crossing close.  Only signal horn blasts on occasion.

KCS' "Meridian Speedway" between Meridian, MS and Shreveport, LA crosses the CN's former Chicago to New Orleans mainline in Jackson.  NS bought a share of the KCS line a number of years back when KCS was looking for capital to help finance a major rehabilitation of this railroad.  In return for their investment, NS trains operate over this line now using KCS crews.

I rode a KCS inspection train over this line about 6 or 7 years ago and was surprised at the volume of traffic it carries.  Although NS' primary interest in using the line was an intermodal connection to BNSF at Alliance Yard in Fort Worth, both KCS and NS run what for the south at least, is a heavy volume of manifest freight trains too.

That location is known as the "switch tender". Every train that comes through Jackson has to come through there. Sometimes there are 3 or 4 waiting in line in every direction.
