"HONGZ" stands for HO scale, N scale, G scale, and Z scale.

Post your non-O scale stuff here!

I am considering dusting off a couple of the Lionel G gauge sets ("Gold Rush Special" is one) I have from the late 80's-early 90's for an upcoming event.  I recall that the last time they were used, at least one loco squeaked quite a bit.

The instruction sheets indicate they are "permanently sealed" & require no service.   I find that hard to believe.  Has any one cracked open one of these units open to see what, if any, sort of lube & cleaning they typically may need?   Thank you all... and have a great weekend!   Ron

Sorry, I don't have any or ever worked on them. I do work on my own engines though.

Maybe something on the Lionel site?

I bet there's a couple of techs here that have been inside one. I believe they are very simple and straight forward.

I usually oil my side rods, axles at the bearing area, and any moving parts that need it. I don't have any G engines with plastic rods though.

Joe, thank you for the tip on linking to the Lionel Support site.   (I never would have though that they would have data on what turned out to be an odd-ball Lionel product from 28 years ago!)  I found exploded diagrams for both of my Lionel Large Scale 0-6-0 & 0-4-0 locos.  It may be a bit tricky to remove those bottom plates, though.  It looks like if you attempt to do so, a whole bunch of springs & brushes may pop out.  The diagrams, appear to show that they jut from the side edges of the bottom plates to contact with the inside of each drive wheel.  I will report back!
