Until now I have been using round stickers of various colors to mark the locations of block gaps in the track, and to identify switches with controllers. This is not working as the stickers are falling off with age.
I am thinking about using push pins of various colors to replace the stickers, but maybe there are other techniques in use.
What technique do you use or do you think is suitable?

I made little markers using some plastic, peal off numerals from Staples or Office Max, and plastic stems from my diabetes needles.
I like using scale signs like Don.

A friend uses tufts of lichen as weeds and shrubs to mark block breaks and uncoupling magnets on his HO layout. Using two distinct and dedicated colors placed on the edge of the ballast, it is very easy to locate these otherwise hidden features. Until he explains what they represent they are are just part of the scenery.
Don has given me an idea. Harbor Freight has identification cable ties, 100 for $2.99 and they look like Don's signs. Clip a tie to height, mark it with a pen, cutoff the top, plant it on the layout and viola!
Bobby regular garden plant markers. Many many sizes and cheap to.

If you happen to be using good ole tubular track, 3r Plastics sells (or used to) their rubber ties in assorted colors to identify blocks, etc.
I really like the idea using the cable tie with the ID "flag" on it.
