Hi GUYZ,

  I have two Lionel Legacy FM Trainmasters.  SKU 2033411 and 2033412, TM 3 and TM4 in a MU.  All is powered with 180 watt brick and using Cab2.   I programmed them with Eng 91 and Eng 93.  I have Eng 91 TM3 as the lead engine in forward running position, and Eng93 TM4 as the second engine also running in the forward position.  Created the MU got the horn blast, but they start up in reverse.  When I use the Cab 2 to switch it to forward the lead unit TM3 the head lights go off but the rear unit TM4 Head lights are on.  I reprogrammed both units but still get the same results.  They both run great alone and start up in the forward position, head lights on, when run independently.  I even switched positions on the units and did a whole new TR with the switched units and still the same thing happens.  Rear unit head lights on while going forward and starts up in reverse.   I tried the AUX2 to turn on lights and no go with that. I am stumped on this one, any suggestions?

     I do not own any of the Legacy Train Master (two words not one), the only Train Master engine I own is a TMCC Kline PRR engine. However here is my guess of what you need to do. First based on the pictures in the Lionel catalog these engine start in forward using the short end as the front of the engine. Both units by themselves should start forward short end first (if this is not correct let me know. When setting up your MU (notice we did not use the term lash up) do the following:

          1. Set up your train number. Say TR 3. You did not mention using a Train Number in your post. Press Build

          2. Add engine number 91 as the lead unit then add # 93. If you have the engines on the track long hood coupled to long hood you need to change the direction of engine 93 so that it will start in the MU Long hood forward. If you are running the engines Elephant style then you don’t have to change the direction of the second engine.

          3. Hit set on the remote and the engines will program and both horns will sound. When you hear both horns you are done.

          4. Run the engines as TR 3 (do not use Eng to address the train

Good luck Trains are pretty easy to build using legacy I have built MUs with up to five Legacy engines and never had a problem (well almost never)

Thanks JOHN, for your comments.  Yes I am running them elephant style.  Short nose forward on both units.  Still when I power it up both units start in reverse.  I have programmed both units to TR 89. I have tried other Eng numbers and other TRs both nothing is working.  Still same outcome of starting in reverse.  I have turned off the head lights of the second unit with addressing the Eng number and also with the lead unit but this should not be the norm for making a Legacy MU.  It should start up in forward with head lights on in lead unit and no head lights in rear unit.

     If both engines start Long Hood forward you can still run the engines in a MU without any issues as Zac states above by changing the direction of both units. One of the benefits of using a Diesel engine instead of a Steam engine was that railroads did not require turntables to turn the engines for a return trip. The preferred way of running diesels is with the front of each unit lined up in opposite directions. This way you do not need a turntable for the return trip. Diesels are usually run in pairs for two reasons 1. One may break down. 2. Don’t have to turn them for the return trip. Based on the picture in the catalog I would of thought the short end was the front of the engine but in the time when Train Masters were introduced most railroads preferred running diesels Long hood forwards.

   When I run my Legacy RS11 PRR engines both of which start Long hood forward I switch the direction of the lead unit so the first engine in the MU starts Short hood forwards. I also always line up the engine Long Hood coupled to Long hood.

   When you see diesels running Elephant style its more a matter of how they were found on the waiting track when being used in a train. Not all MUs have even numbers of engines so they do come out of the waiting track Elephant style. Watch the Horseshoe Curve Live cam and not the MUs. It’s real interesting.
