I just brought home my new Pennsy RS-11 6-38454 and it works great!... EXCEPT the forward headlight doesn't work. The reverse one works just fine. I really don't want to send it back, or return it to the LHS, which is 100 miles away. I'm pretty handy, but there are a lot of screws on the bottom. Any thoughts?

Not sure but maybe try hitting Aux. 2
The first thing I would try would be to do a complete reprogram.
Look in the manual and there should be instructions how to do ao
complete reprogram of your engine. If this does not work I suggest
giving Lionel a call they may be able to assist you over the phone.
Best of luck.
There should be a diagram in the back of the manual to show you which screws are the body screws. I would call Lionel before opening it, unless you know what your doing. Once you have the screws out, carefully and slowly pull the shell off, I would check to make sure the modular plug coming from the front light is plugged in. if everything looks good and secure, call Lionel, might be a bad LED.
Rule 17 Lighting
Use the Rule 17 buttons
to turn the Rule 17 lighting
functionality (e.g., headlights
dim at a stop) on and off

Rule 17 should affect Front and Rear lights, so if the rear is working, the front should be too.
It should be fine to remove the shell from the RS-11, as you have to do this to install a battery. The instructions for this are in the manual. Just be careful of all of the wires, as it is pretty well packed inside the shell.
I would agree with Travis that a loose plug to the front headlamp is quite possible, as these can work loose in transit if they are not pushed fully home. Do the red lights come on at the front-end when the locomotive is in reverse? If not, then a loose plug is even more likely. If they do come on, then a failed headlamp LED is possible if a loose plug is not the culprit. In this case, a quick call to Lionel would be the best course of action. Their customer service is superb.
Edit: I've just remembered that these locomotives have 2 LED's in the headlamp clusters, so a dead LED is more unlikely than a bad/loose connection. Do check both ends of the cables though.
OK, so its fixed. I pushed all the rule 17 buttons a bunch of times in a row and now it works. hmmmm
On to the next problem, which started when this one was solved.
Hi I have the same problem with my New Rs-11 only it is intermittently on off with the lower LED only on the front not working.
Your engine has a PCB with the headlight LEDS and marker lights mounted to it. You have a 6 pin Leoco (white in color) plug that connects to the PCB. Pull and reseat the plug and chances are very good you will be operating. I had one that needed one leg of the LED touched up with a hot iron. Give that a try. Do the marker lights on the same PCB work? The headlight LEDS are good quality that Lionel uses.
