While test running my new BN #1991 SD60 I noticed the middle drive wheels on each truck are 1-2mm off the track thus making my SD60 4 wheel drive with only the driven traction tire wheels touching the rails. I thought about putting the thinner MTH tires but it appears the non driven wheels on each truck are mounted lower in the trucks than the driven wheels. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

do you have a dash number?
Measure the wheels with a caliper. It’s possibly intentional to make 3 flanged axles do O36

I dont think the minimum curve would be a reason to lift a drive axle off the track? Why not lift the non powered axle? Both trucks on my 6-84400 and my 6-84401 look the same.
If anyone has one of the newer SD60M's can you check yours?
I have to agree. Raising the middle axle doesn’t make any sense to navigate tighter curves. However, as Superchiefer84 mentions, raising the non-powered would.
So I went to check out my two SD60E’s, and both are the same as you mention. The wheels on the middle axle on all trucks rides just above the track. The only pulling is done by the traction tire axles.
Now I will have to check out my other Lionel 3 axle trucks (SD70ACE’s) when I have more time.
If you know someone that's at the York meet you can have them swing by the Lionel booth and ask Dave Olson,I'm sure he would know. If not then shoot him a direct email to his address in his profile.
