"HONGZ" stands for HO scale, N scale, G scale, and Z scale.

Post your non-O scale stuff here!

My uncle has two right out of the box and they won't run.  When I put wires to the trucks the lights come on and you can feel the trucks trying to turn.  Is there anything that needs to be removed?  Do you think they may be bound up from sitting a long time and I should take the body off and see if I can free them up?  Any suggestions?

Thanks, Ken

Excellent advice from SPSF.  Those Proto units are known for the grease hardening like old peanut butter, and cracked axle gears.  A friend has a fleet of Proto Geeps, and a couple years ago I went through all of them, cleaning the gearboxes and replacing axle gears.  Only one out of the batch didn't have cracks, so definitely figure on replacing them.

Thanks for the excellent advise.  I moved to O scale but my uncle is still in HO.

Where can I get the gears?  I need 4 sets as he has 4 GP-30s.

You can use the axle gears from Athearn, part number ATH60024.  They sell for $7.00 for a pack of six gears.

The other problem that I have found with Life Life Proto2000 series diesels is the "oil" on the worm bearing turns into glue, thus keeping the worms for being able to rotate.  A good cleaning out of the old oil, followed by an application of good oil corrects this problem.
