Dave and Allan, for the salaries those Lionel management decision makers  likely get, you'd think a decision of that scope would have been taken into consideration prior to just a few days ago when Charlie said they moved the date to the 13th. That decision seems more of an afterthought by them. If this is representative of the thinking process of Lionel's management team, then Lordy help us model train consumers.

Good thinking, Dave. You may very well be right about the release date.

But is Friday the 13th that much better?

After previewing the Lionel 2014 Preview Catalog...

..........?

..........!

..........You must be kidding?

I was hoping the Orange/Blue folks would give me something for 2014 to take the mind off of another election year's hysteria.  Not to be.

Mike Wolf....Mike Wolf.........can you salvage the coming year for us??

Good grief, Charlie Brown.  To think that NASCARitis has come to this.

Considering the fact that the new management team is still getting organized, I am pretty sure that this add-on catalog was not going to be filled with all kinds of new stuff. I do not expect very much until the 2014 Signature catalog comes out.

No disappointment here if this is the case.

Which we were told (earlier this year) wasn't going to happen!!!    That's probably a big reason folks thought this catalog was gonna be a "sneak preview" of stuff for 2014.  Then we heard about the built-to-order, reservation-only gibberish that also contributed to stuff for 2014.  And that may still happen NEXT YEAR.

So as we glean more information, things are coming into focus a bit more clearly.  From what we know now, the stuff appearing in this "2013 Fall Catalog" (that originally wasn't supposed to even happen) may largely be locomotives re-packaged a bit differently.  What we still don't know is WHEN this stuff will be delivered to dealers.

Quite possibly, this stuff has already arrived in the States and may be sitting on dealer shelves within a few weeks.  That could certainly be the case for the 611J.  But what about those weathered locomotives?  Who knows for sure at this point, but they too could already have been shipped overseas pending arrival in NC.  I guess we'll know more in the next week or so.

David, in one of my earlier posts I stated that in the catalog they are promoting that these engines are being weathered by Harry Heinke, hence the surcharge $$$$ for the weathering. These are not being weathered overseas and then being shipped. This is more of the attempt to get rid of existing inventory that is not moving. By the way, good photo of Harry in the catalog, maybe he will sign a few of them!

Boy, tough crowd.

I still hold hope for a re-issued Lionmaster Legacy NYC Hudson or SP cab forward and possibly a Legacy Phantom set.

Reissues of prior products with their new respective system (Legacy or PS3) is the new normal so the days of new locomotive products will be few and far between for both Lionel and MTH.

I can see a blow out sale on 611 J's in the making. If these are the engines that will be needed for the Pocahontas sets, it just means that there will be more N&W J's on the market. I already have a J from a few years, it's not a Legacy engine, but it fits my needs. I do have a Pocahontas set on order and the main reason that I'm purchasing is to have a more modern set of passenger cars. I really don't need another J.

When I talked to Mike at Service Center affair he told me that 176 different items are on their way here from China, somewhere between here & there. So it will not be long before some of those items will in our LHS.

The way it sounds now is that I'm going to save some until Jan.

I saw the catalog earlier today at my LHS and it is pretty thin gruel. Pretty much exactly as described here. I am surprised Lionel would spend the money to print and distribute it, to be honest. There is a new Santa Fe 4-4-2 starter freight set (MSRP $199) shown which hasn't been mentioned here. Maybe they need an extra low-cost set for Christmas selling?

I did pick up my Great Northern Hi-Cube box car that just came in, plus the alien/flying saucer billboard set, so a few things are dribbling in. Or should I say "hovering overhead"? WATCH THE SKIES!

On one hand, I understand Lionel's thinking here... they have a bunch of #611 J locomotives sitting in factory storage awaiting their passenger cars to complete "the Pocahontas sets".  So somebody has a grand idea to make a few quick bucks my selling the locomotives ala carte now.

But that doesn't really do ANYTHING for someone who's waiting on the entire set.  They're certainly not gonna buy a #611 J now only to take shipment of another #611 J when the passenger cars meet up with the set's loco in an overseas factory.  And what about folks (like me) who were only interested in a stand-alone J 'cause we already had nice scale passenger cars?  Well, we very likely purchased the #612 J that was originally destined for separate sale earlier this year.  So how many #611's do they expect to sell separately???    I know... they'll definitely be takers.  But like you said, I wouldn't be surprised to see these blown out in the not-too-distant future.

The whole strategy is a mess.

Back in April at York I discussed the "J" reissue with some of Lionel's marketing gurus, none of whom looked like they were alive thirty years ago. Each explained the lack of whistle steam in the reissue differently. To each I said, I have a fabulous #611 now so Legacy is not going to get me to commit without the added feature of whistle steam which I love.

Most of them responded, "Buyers will buy the 611 with Legacy because they want a 611.

I said, "I have a 611."

They smiled.

I'll see them again in October and ask about the "blowouts."

Breeze,

I followed that post about the Great Northern GP-35 and the color of those pictures posted before. I decided to take a chance and glad I did. From all of my books that I have they are spot on correct color. They match the GN GP-9's from last year.

I took two pictures of mine, one inside and one outside in natural light. The one I took inside with a flash pretty much looked like the one yo have seen before. But the ones taken outside look just like the real engines in all of my books.

If they make more orange/green versions in new numbers I am buying them. They look good don't let those pictures from before fool you. There is a good picture of one on Model Train stuffs web site.
