I'd really love to get the Wheeling & Lake Erie Berkshire - I already have the Mallet & Mikado for this local road - but I don't think it's in the budget, at least as a pre-order.  Hopefully I can snag one in a year or two.

I certainly wouldn't panic if funds are tight for pre-ordering.  I've been able to pick up some GREAT deals on stuff AFTER delivery -- often well below the typical pre-order price levels when dealers are offering discount sales.  As long as dealers continue to order BTO "extras", this shouldn't be a problem.  But sometimes you'll need to shop around for a certain roadname or road-number.

That's not to say I won't pre-order anything from this catalog... just sayin' pre-ordering isn't a MUST -- especially for the real big-ticket items when we're not 100% sure exactly how the finished production model will appear.  That's been Lionel's biggest challenge as they transition to a more formal BTO manufacturing process.

I agree but it does really depend on how bad you want it and the item.  Some items will be over purchased by the dealers and even so they will go like hot cakes (whatever that means).  The Scale Polar Express Berks always go fast along with the cars.  That's why I will be pre-ordering those.

I'm buying the Hot Wheels set as an investment.  Just kidding.  I do think it's likely to be a good seller, and it is tempting as a conversation piece. I'm one of the few willing to admit that orange Fastrack is kind of cool.

I noticed that the dealer pre-order prices on these sets have rather good discounts (25% off MSRP?) compared with many other items, unless I am misreading the tea leaves and need to be corrected.

The discount off MSRP is meaningless... just one big illusion.   And God help the stores trying to sell this stuff at MSRP.  They might as well close their doors right now.

The REAL meat on the bones is the actual selling price dealers will offer above their cost.  For now, nearly all the usual dealers are pumping out MAP prices on their websites based on Lionel's sales kit that includes an order/pricing spreadsheet.  Once the dust settles and catalog excitement dies down a bit, some dealers typically offer special prices below MAP for a limited time... usually with a special coupon code or by calling the store.

Exactly.  Sometimes the PE/Polar RR engines can go quickly, and I definitely want to finish out both trains (black & gold) w/this opportunity.  However, I definitely have had no problem finding a W&LE Mikado after the fact if I had needed/wanted to...and at a comparable price.  Also can't hurt to let my usual dealer know that I would likely be interested in something at a little later time.

Yeah, I was all over it - until I looked at it again - it is a dark red - the real cars were black and black only. I was even going to go for the 3-pack if I found a friendly-enough price.

Nope. No way. I'll skip it. Every time I'd look at them...it would be ouch. No joy there. Save my money.

I'd like to get the additional TankTrain cars.  There are a few other items that I'd like, but Labor Day is Moving Day to Southern California.  With my current pre-order backlog it may actually be a while before I order from any catalog, unless something tugs viciously at my heart strings.  After settling in and getting a new job, funds will be distributed for a new Model Train Palace in the side yard and Mianne Benchwork to fill it.  (But then there's always the York Meet!)

Luckily for me the stuff I really want I already have from past orders.  The Polar Express Berk is awesome so if you missed it last time, get it.  I have the whole scale PE set.  Those who missed it last time won't be getting the scale forgotten toy train.  It's not offered this time around.  Now that was a very cool addition to the scale passenger set.  But at least the new cars have the PE lettering in the correct place and snow on the roof.  All in all a great set.

Hallelujah!   A break on the wallet.   My only purchase will be the Bucyrus Erie Glassport Pa PS2 covered hoppers.   Before Bucyrus that plant was Textron and before that was the Pittsburgh Steel Foundry(and machine shop),  another one of Pittsburgh's industrial icons of the 20th century.

You have obviously done some research. How could Lionel miss the color completely? I can understand being off a shade or two of the correct color.

Here is a hint..      I'm pulling the trigger on the Hot Wheels set. It will probably just more of a shelf queen but I was into Hot Wheels before I was into trains when I was a kid! Now I get to have both! The orange fastrack on display will be even cooler!

If Lionel is smart they will include orange fastrack in their Halloween sets and offer it for separate sale as I'm sure folks who set up Halloween layouts would purchase it as well.

That could be but Lionel might have made an agreement with Mattel to only produce a limited run for the Hot Wheel sets?

Just got my first look a while ago. I know I am a little behind...

I think the Hobby Shop, Radio tower with Bluetooth for sounds, a couple of BNSF gondolas and maybe a BNSF container car or two might be the must haves for now.

Didn't see any engines I couldn't live without, but I need another look or two of the catalog. Will probably wait for the print version before ordering anything from my LHS.

The Hot Wheels sets needs some exclusive Hot Wheel cars on it.

An excellent point, this set would be an easy sell if exclusive "Hot Wheels" were included. The catalog description does state that two "Hot Wheels" are included with the auto rack. (generic or exclusive?)

Hopefully, Lionel will offer extra orange track in varying shapes and sizes.

Something from the past in gold perhaps for their 50th.

A quick check of one of our forum sponsors shows a nice price differential on the Radio Tower from msrp, but unfortunately a delivery date of May 2018.  ...

Unfortunately?  If that date holds, that's pretty good. That's only 10 months out.

With Lionel publishing two healthy-sized Signature catalogs, it'll be interesting to see how well the delivery pipeline can be sustained throughout the year.  At this point, any delivery dates of stuff featured in the latest catalog are best viewed as nothing more than place-holders, since it's unlikely Lionel Stateside even has a clue when or exactly who's gonna make all the stuff -- much less know a specific delivery date at this point.
