Simple question: Are they called "starter sets" in the catalog? Or was that a poster's comment?

Also a Lion Chief Plus 2.0 Polar Express engine, which I have seen numerous posts about people wishing they would come out with a Lion Chief Plus version of that engine.
What LC+ 2.0 Starter Sets?
$799.95 for the PRR and NKP Berkshires sets and $1599.95 for the LionMaster Big Boy (w/LC+ 2.0) set and all come without track or power supply. While they may have their merits by being LC+ 2.0, by lacking track and power supply these hardly classify as "Starter Sets."
All of the starter sets in the catalog are still flagged as regular LionChief.

I stand by my statement.

A starter set by definition has everything needed to set up and go. Nothing extra to purchase. I see no track or power supply included with these sets on pages 84-87.

I'll change my statement then, Lion Chief Plus 2.0 set, I don't recall seeing a Lion Chief Plus set before. I took the word starter out for you.

The're just called sets in the catalog. I put that in incorrectly, which the OP was quick to point out.

Davety,
You are correct and I understand what you were trying to say. These are the first-ever catalogued LC+ (or now, LC 2.0) sets by Lionel.
One thing that caught my eye was the S-Gauge PRR work Train Set and add on cars. I’m not into S-Gauge, but if I were that would be one that I would go for. Kind of disappointed that it wasn’t offered in The O Scale section. I guess I will have to find the bunk and kitchen cars separately to add to my work train.
WOW! Did anyone take a looksie of the Scale Polar Express cars? NOT only an RPO [ hopefully will be using the Weaver "clearstory" roof and Square windows...]
But what I suggested to Dave and Ryan the past several years at the "Big E" the :
- HOT Chocolate car with the HOT Chocolate Song!,
- Also the Abandoned Toy car in white roof this time
- a 15th Anniversary coach add on and
- for Polar Express Freight, a Squealing boxcar! [That gonna be a sell out!]
Boy I am GLAD that Charlie Ro shorted me one coach of the Snow Roofed Polar Express set!
I just found a copy of the 2019 Big Book Catalogue in my mailbox. I’m impressed that the LCCA got it to me on the release day!

Dave,
They had an O gauge PRR Bunk, Tool and Kitchen Car w/sound in the 2018 V2 Catalog. I have them on order. I got a MTH PRR Crane at York so I am almost set on my work train. I will pull it with my Legacy Pennsy Lines H10.

Wow, outstanding!
I just posted in another thread that I never do my ordering until I have a hard copy in my hands. Something about being able to view everything in print rather than online. I usually see things that I missed first time around (hold the geezer jokes ).

You know, it’s hard to believe with as much new stuff as there is in the catalog, but I can find only a couple of things that interest me. Strange. Or maybe not since I have so darn much already ...
I do think that Lionel has segmented its market into smaller and smaller niches delineated by narrow special interests as well as technology. Especially so with the various demarkations between Legacy, LC and LC+. Here we are where the only purely Conventional offering is a passenger set first offered two years ago and now resurrected and touted as being for “Conventional only!” And so, so many cartoon and other entertainment tie-ins, etc.
How times have changed. (He said wistfully, fondly recalling his childhood in the 1950’s and the fewer - but much more simple - Lionel products of that storied era.)
To make a long story short, I find only one engine set that interests me: the Alco FA in Legacy. If I bite, I will have to pay extra for all the features I don’t need since I am a purely Conventional runner. But knowing me as well as I do, I will probably bite.
i was hoping for more and different LC+ choices, but I have quite a few already, so that’s no big deal. I need to play more with the ones I already have, as my wife keeps telling me. “Yes, dear.”
And so it goes.

John,
I’ll have to pick up the kitchen and bunk car after they are released. I too have the MTH crane car, as well as several Weaver MoW cars to make up my train. I will be pulling mine with my Legacy PRR GP-7.

1.) I have always wanted something other than the 1225 to pull my PE scale freight. The bi-polar isn't my thing, but I hope it signals more PE engines (non-1225) are possible down the road. Maybe a small steamer or an early diesel (GP7/9). (I know there is a Polar Railroad GP7, but I'm talking specific to PE).
2.) Even though it's a tad salty, I would spring for a Hot Chocolate car, but I have the first run of cars (black roof/no snow). I wish they would have offered a Hot Chocolate version to go with the first run cars.
3.) I have many of the earlier PS-1 boxcars with sound and like them. The PE version with jingling bells mixed into the freight sounds seems like it would be fun.
4.) Now the question: I assume the black roof PE RPO is the same as the RPOs previously released by Lionel (former Weaver). It's not clear from the catalog - is the lighting LED?
You must have missed it. They did make a Hot Chocolate car for the first run. We have one with our set.
Was it scale? I remember seeing one in traditional, but if it was made in scale then you're right - I missed it.

Dave, yes, and I hear you on the now re-catalogued x3 Postwar-inspired Green Alco Set. I have this set, and love it, but disappointed that Lionel hasn't offered something new in this line.
Oh, well. That's $400-$500 that I can put into buying some more genuine Postwar.
Wow, all that wait and anticipation for the big Catalog reveal. Just my opinion, what a let down. I guess you can’t throw a Strike with every pitch. But someone should be sent back to the minors on this one.

Some cool stuff in this catalog - it's going to be fun deciding what to get!
Have they given the "must be ordered by" date?
I think Lionel is answering requests posted hundreds of times in this forum, "A BREWERY!!!!"

Hi everyone!
Ryan and I are doing a Facebook Live video today at 3:30pm eastern. We'll be going over the new catalog in detail, so please tune in to have your questions answered. We will take questions there regarding the catalog.
If there are other questions unanswered after the video, I will try to check the forum but my time to do so lately has been limited. Emails are welcome.
Dave
I'm in for some sound boxcars. Now to find a Dealer, my go to shut down shop.
One disappointment for me are the ACL purple RPO and baggage cars. I know they are adding more schemes to these ex-Weaver cars, but the real ones rode on 6 wheel trucks! Better to use the Atlas Trainman cars as a starting point. I will have to see about the ACL bulkhead flats, but if they are 90% close might have to get the pair. Also noticed the rerun of the Southern RPO and baggage, which are god representations of these cars.
Noticed the ALCO green passenger car set is still listed. Have sales been that bad that they have to keep running in the catalog?

Ryan and Dave,
Good day, what bribes are needed to get Lionel to do an optional separate sale SF "Gold Bonnet," not a fan of 21" passenger cars.

Right on, John! I have the set, too, and it is a winner.
What puzzles me is why the call-out for “Conentional use!” ?
i mean, if they have totally abandoned Conventional power, why make special note of its apparent last gasp in this catalog?
i think that you and I are not the only ones running Conventional by any means.

I think they added Conventional Use to distinguish from all the new LC and LC+ remote sets. I don't think Lionel is going back to pure conventional operation (no remote) locomotives again in the near future. I would be nice to see some add-on cars to this set, but fore now I have the 1990 or so service station set green cars to run with them.
This is one BIG and EXPENSIVE Catalog!!
Here are some highlights I saw:
Nice touch with the custom J's. I like the AFT but from a customer who has one of everything, there are just too many J's right now. So I passed... I passed on the K2a too, because it was so close to the J in appearance. Most people viewing my layout would not know the difference.
Now here is DIAMOND in the rough! A North Coast Limited Dome Car? Is this something that IS to come?
I am ordering the 2 pack... just to get this car!!!!
Sign me up for one of these ... Please RYAN no more Grey or bright silver paint on the smoke and fire box... just use the old color... PLEASE!
OK! So can I get an AMEN on this? What took SOOOO Long? I like the added long haul option ... will I go for two?
Can we get one with smoke defectors on it? If we are going fantasy? Sure looks nice...
Speaking of fantasy...
Can we just get new boiler for these? Argh....
I missed the first run of 2 truck shays so .... Nice

Dave, Oh, definitely. There’s a good handful of us around here. I call it the vocal minority.
I think it goes without saying that the Conventional Classics and PWC items are gone for good. But when they did the Alco Set two years ago I had hopes that Lionel would dangle a conventional/traditional set every other catalog or so. Apparently not. And it is humorous to see the “conventional” label highlighted. We know!

The NP dome, named Stampede Pass, was a regular on 611 trips, along with the other cars on that page. I do not think Lionel will be making a NCL full set anytime soon.
How about all boxpok drivers on NYC 5413? Don't like the mixed drivers or the discs. Nice catalog though and I second the silver on the PRR J-1s - make it the same used on the previous two runs.
Lets see what else my wallet will spring for... mind you all I need for this to come in 4 weeks before Christmas again!
I think I am seeing a trend here... BTW what happened to the Santa Fe War bonnet paint scheme ?
The STATE set is cool... maybe just maybe...
Now this set is a winner... Nice
More ES 44s?
LOL - I bet the 49er sells out... Hey where is the Polar Express version?
NOW this is a winner... I like the thought of getting a whole string of ore cars in a set. Can we get some Michigan UP road names? that would be a BIG hit...

Color me intrigued. Some of Lionel's Legacy diesels are now equivalent in price to MTH's Premier diesels, e.g. the Allegheny Railroad GP35 and the C420 (which was previously $529.99). I want to know how Lionel decided which units to power and which to make non-powered; I for one in the abstract would be more interested in a powered high-hood D&H C420 than the low-hood version.
I was also impressed with the amount of train included in the $899.99 specialty ore set; to get the equivalent from MTH, one would have to spend $360 for 2 Premier 6-car sets (which haven't been made since 2009), plus $460 for an F unit, since MTH doesn't make a C420.
Trackmobiles are back, but more expensive.
The good news: There's FINALLY a Tier 4 diesel in O gauge; the bad news is that it's a semi-scale ET44AC.
B&LE 643 with cylinder cock steam is interesting, but it has the wrong sand dome, at the very least.
An intriguing catalog, to say the least.
I will have to catch up on FB after Dave and Ryan talk as I don't get out of work early enough. I'll also have to take a great long look at the catalog when I get in. Some "Must Have's" in there for sure. I'll have to think on the N&W J's because I'm interested in getting a few Hudson's(which I'll need to look at in amazement probably) and think the PRR Texas I'll need to get one. I'll go from there on after to figure out what interests me.

Thanks for the reminder, I forgot all about the FB live video
I just got my catalog and will enter into the fray although I won't pile on. Just my first impressions:
1. I am very, very happy I jumped on LC+ when engines were <= $250 because they no longer exist.
2. I love LC+ but 2.O is priced more than I want to pay and vanilla LC doesn't have enough semi scale detail that I like.
2. I will be looking in more detail at the Williams section of the Bachmann catalog.
So as my wallet continues to bleed green ink ... How about this....!
Now this would be a great set to have ... I wish I had the coin...
Below we have the expected release of the Santa Fe 21 inch cars... I say SOLD!
But the RPO car will stay on the siding...
I like the MP cars. But when did Heavyweight cars become 150 dollars each? Sheesh!!
Nice FA sets. I like the way you can 'Build your Own' with multiple B units, powered or un powered. but can we get sound in these please? What happened to the super bass option?
Now this is a set! keep the tanks comin' boyz..... can I buy just a 3 or 2 pk of the tanks? That would be a seller.
but why so much?
Attachments
And last but not least the BEER cars and the Budweiser set is back! If we are going to sell beer, can I get a car with the Budweiser girls on it? BTW ... why is this a kids set... I like the 21 and older note
And of course my favorite cars... WW2 commemorative box cars, I love the bomber nose art

I have the solution!
I just bought a next-thing-to-brand new MARX Big Rail Work Train set (1970 vintage). It is pure conventional; it is complete with sparkling track, pristine buildings, all the accessories and rolling stock, and a working transformer (only flaw: missing part of the lever on the manual switch); and it runs great with working light and strong smoke. And it cost less than one of the new, low-end engines in this catalog.
I think this purchase is the most appropriate way to celebrate the release of this catalog.
