Lionel #6262 Wheel Car

The last I checked, the cheapest way to get a load of wheels for an old wheel car was to rob them off of a new wheel car from "an auction site".  (usually new ones are cheaper. The wrong kind by year too, so if you're fussy look elsewhere)

look for junk cars, easy find at train shows. and just rob the wheels. usually $5 or even less.

You can, but I think the wheel sets on that car had the axles pinched on the outside as well to keep the wheels from separating.  Actually think normal cars had that feature for a short while in the time frame that car was made... 1956 ish.

BTW, if yours is the Red version, jump for joy.....

I agree with Adriatic, & Steamer that easiest way is buy a junker from the time period (mid 1950’s), and take the wheelsets from them.  You aren’t looking to sell it, but keep it as your own, so look for old bar end trucks, on junk box cars at train shows.

Most plastic postwar Lionel trucks have wheel sets with the axles pinched on the inside and outside.

How exact to you want to be?
Sometimes the axles were plated, sometimes black.
The shape of the wheel was changed at least once in the early 1960's. Maybe more times.

Sorry to say, it is not a high value car.
I would just try to find six matching wheel sets.

I have put wheel sets on those cars that did not have the axles pinched on the outside.
The wheel sets stayed together on the car just fine. But if I picked up the car carelessly and tipped it, the wheel sets would fall off the tray and come apart.

I use wheel sets that the axles are bent a little.  Can't use them on the rails of rolling stock but always as loads.  Start spinning the wheels and axles under other cars and you might find some.

Great advice Mike! Explored Train Tender, asked Jeff a few questions, he was able to supply complete wheel sets. The 6262 Wheel Car came out better than I expected. Much Thanks!

Marksman, It’s all a matter of preference, but the actual load only consisted of 6 wheelsets.  If you like/prefer 8, then it looks great.  The RED 6262, is the much sought after, and very expensive issue.  Many things have been said, that dealers, in the early days, would take the Red ones out, and replace them with the common Black version.  I don’t see where that was actually the case.  I think it’s more along the lines of, not that many Red ones were actually made, which makes them Rare & desirable.  Just my opinion.

Looks great with 8 wheelsets, it's a full load.
