"HONGZ" stands for HO scale, N scale, G scale, and Z scale.

Post your non-O scale stuff here!

I am working with my Lionel large-scale UP GP20 (8-85006) for the first time.  It has Railsounds that the instructions say will produce idling sounds, but with the required DC power source there is no "idle" mode, just forward and reverse.  I don't understand!

Is there a "Table of Contents" for the Lionel repair documents where I can find the 8-85006's documents?  Maybe that would help me understand the functions of the 4 printed circuit boards in this diesel.  (I have read the operator's manual.)

Dale, I don't have this exact engine. I know of a couple guys who have. Maybe Casey here on the forum would know or someone else here over in the Lionel forum?

I think Casey took the railsounds boards out and replaced with MTH's ( I now have it) but he may know about them.

I don't believe they had any neutral, so maybe it would idle at a low voltage???

I traced out the circuit for the PC card that drives the loudspeaker, and in so doing discovered the volume control that is disguised as the end cap of an air tank underneath.  When I turned up the volume, I got engine sounds and bell/horn!  Previously, when I had the shell off, I saw some little pots on one of the boards and thought that was the volume control, but I was wrong!

Now I need to move the remote bell/horn activator box from my test track to the outside layout to see if it plays nicely with that power supply.

Thanks for the suggestion.
