Lionel SD70ACe C&NW - no smoke | O Gauge Railroading On Line Forum

I purchased a SD70ACe C&NW Legacy (6-28280) engine from the boards here and the engine is fantastic. However, the only issue I have is that it is not smoking at all. I was told it did work, but the engine was also sitting on the shelf for a long time.

What I have done so far:

Added around 15 drops of smoke fluid - not going to add anymore now
Blew into the stack several times
Reset the engine
Switched the smoke on and off a few times
Removed and added it back to my Legacy remote
Took a flashlight and tried to see if there was any blockage - couldn't really see that far

Anything else I could try before bringing this down to my local hobby shop and have them take a look?

that engine is over 5 years old and probably just needs the wicking changed. diesels are not as easy as the steam so I just turn mine off. diesels aren't supposed to smoke anyway.

If the fan is running, I would concur that the wick has probably dried out and/or has broken. I've had to open up a couple of MTH smoke units to reposition the wick. I did have one engine where the wire had come loose from the fan motor, but in that case, the locomotive body filled up with smoke.

Is the fan loud enough to hear, because this thing is pretty silent. I guess I will just take the body off and see what I can see.

Going from off - low - med - high on the Legacy remote causes no change in sound as far as I can tell. So perhaps it is the fan motor.

Set smoke to low, run engine. Do not set on high! A chopped wave xfrmr is best, even a cw80. Smoke should begin to be produced after a few minutes. If no joy then element is likely shot, as you usually get smoke, albeit anemic, when batting is charred. Mike
