Bought my 4 year old the little lionel polar express. set it up for Christmas morning. He had taken my scout set off the track and tried to push it on the floor so he is not ready for real ones yet. He ran his set constantly all day Christmas day and starts it first thing the next morning. He runs it off the track and on the hardwood and says it is the scene where the train was running on the frozen lake. He will likely be ready for an O scale next year. Glad I just got him this set this year and not a real one. He is real pleased. I am too. I could have gotten him GEo trax but those trains do not have significance to him like the polar express does.

And a new generation is set up.
My sister's neighbor got one of the new Lion Chief sets. 2 years old and it's the first thing she wanted to show my sister when they visited. Not only show her, operated it for them. So maybe this hobby isn't in as much trouble as we think.
It's great to know that the youngsters are interested in model trains.
Now, this is my opinion: For the MOST part, MOST model train enthusiasts are happier and more productive.
No gangs, no hassles and no problems!!!!!
At least, that is the way I see it!!
I hope, that I'm not wrong.

it's hard to have hoodlum friends if they think you are geeky and weird for playing with trains. It is also hard to have hoodlum friends if you are busy in your room running trains around and going to train stores dreaming of the next item for your layout. mine stays busy with his train, he stops for a while sometimes, but goes back to it. I got his older brother some HO stuff for Christmas. We built a small layout for last Christmas together.
The famous movie line, "if you build it, they will come" applies here. Nice stories this Christmas season.
I bought a Little Lionel Polar Express set for one of my friends 9 month old. On Christmas Day the little guy had the remote in hand and had figured out how to run the train. He was loving it and did not want to stop playing trains. Sound familiar? :-)
i can just see it now... a whole new generation of kids who are going to question why my Berkshire has so many wheels! ...
