I want to build a Z scale table layout or what's commonly referred to as a coffee table layout. An online search of them has turned up numerous examples, most, however, are made with custom-built tables. Since I don't have the cabinet making and woodworking skills, or the patience, to make such a table myself, I'm looking for a built table or one requiring simple assembly which has a glass top with adequate depth below the glass for a Z gauge layout. I'd prefer either a square, rectangular or oval shaped table, possibly even an end table. Does anyone know where such a table is available? Ideally, it would be a mission style piece with an oak finish, made of wood or particle board covered with a simulated wood grain vinyl. I'm also open to purchasing an unfinished wood table requiring staining.
What would be a recommended size table for such a layout?
Looking forward to replies from those having experience with such a layout as well as specifics on where I can purchase a table suitable for such a layout.
Btw, I'm not interested in a building a layout sitting on top of a table as that would involve having a plexiglass covering custom made for such a layout, likely quite expensive with the result likely resembling more of an exhibit or display piece rather than furniture.
