Midweek Photos returns for another Wednesday full of fun, and possibly to get your engines revving for a train chase or ride this weekend.  What's on your list?  Last Saturday, I took to the chase to catch two of Steamtown's trains.  With Amtrak no longer observing National Train Day, railroads, museums and modeling clubs had the choice of either May 7 or May 14 to celebrate.  This made for twice as many options on where to go.  Steamtown had two different types of trains to offer.  The steam powered "Scranton Limited" train runs in the yard limits, which includes the edge of the downtown.

With the telephoto lens, I was able to catch about 1/4 mile of the trip while standing still.  Kind of a lazy man's train chase. Here is Baldwin Locomotive Works No. 26 climbing the China Wall in Scranton past the Mattes Street Tower.

With the Hilton hotel in the background, little 26 steams along the old DL&W train shed.

The DL&W station is now a Radisson Hotel.

A little later, I went to Myrtle Street in the east side of town to catch the excursion that went to Moscow.

Delaware Lackawanna C425 No. 2452 led the way.  This locomotive is over 50 years old.  Older now than some of the steam engines were when their preservation began.  This "modern" diesel can smoke it up with the best of them.

And off they go.  That is my offering for the week.  How have your train sightings been?  If you caught anything you would like to share, that is why we have this place.  Enjoy the rest of your week.  See you again in 7 days.

I visited my aunt and uncle in Embreeville, PA on Sunday the fifteenth. They live within walking distance of East Penn Railroad's W&N line  (Former Reading).

From the former Embreeville platform, looking south, toward Chadds Ford JCT., Elsmere, and Wilmington. The  boxcars are owned and used for storage by the Embreeville Mill, who acquired them from the Luria Bros. scrap yard that once operated in Modena, PA. They are sitting on a derelict spur to a coal trestle hidden in the trees.

Also from the former Embreeville platform, looking north, toward Coatesville, The PRR Main Line connection at Valley Station, and, prior to the mid-1980's, my own community of Cedar Knoll, a former PRR connection at Suplee JCT., the town of Elverson, and the connection to RDG main at Birdsboro. The derelict coal trestle track is visible to the right.

May 5-8th I was in Roanoke,VA. for the circus better known as the 611 excursions. As "Pennsy Pride" Mike states in another thread, rainy day photography is a challenge, that was the case on the first 2 days.
NS ran plenty of freights on these days, it seemed each trip of the 611 had several freights to meet.
The local folk say traffic is down, I'd like to see it when traffic is up!
Here is a selection of freight traffic that ran before, during, and after the 611 excursions.
1-3; Pounding rain on the 5th meant ISOs from 800-1600, this was a work train and a westbound coal empty just west of Bedford,VA.
4-5; On May 7th, this eastbound stacker passed the 611 and train just west of Bonsack,VA.
6; CP engine leads a westbound past waiting 611 in Roanoke (if a steam engine could sneer...)
7; Westbound freight passes excursion on Christiansburg Grade; taken from Stampede Pass dome car.
8-9; New rebuilt GE's in special livery at Roanoke yard, again from Stampede Pass.
10-14; Westbound stack trains between Salem and Elliston, taken from a closed grade crossing.
15-17; Westbound coal empties roll through Vicker,VA. and under the iconic coal dock.

CSX just completed  the construction of a new bridge about seven miles railroad east

of Cumberland. It can be seen at Lock 75 of the old  C&O canal.

It replaced an old, REALLY old bridge, pictured in the first two images  here.

The third image is while construction was going on, and the rest are  the completed bridge.

The bridge crosses the Potomac River. The photos are of an eastbound manifest, and

something I missed in the middle of said manifest, some of the new safety train cars.

The last photo is of a westbound manifest.

The first two photos made with a Nikon D200, and a 28/70 lens.

The rest with trains were made with Nikon D7000 and 18/140 lens.

For the past month I've been having a change of pace.  There are a lot of abandoned or very low volume tracks in South Dakota, some of which I haven't visited in over ten years.  Lately I've been poking around them for a fresh look.  I am drawn to scenes of abandonment and decay--plenty of that in these tiny towns off the beaten path!  I've mostly only  been shooting b&w film as it seems to be a good fit.  Camera is either a Nikon F3/T from 1983 with same vintage lenses, or a Chamonix 4x5 field camera with lenses from 1910--1920s.  These aren't the usual foamer shots but I'm hoping you like at least one or two.

1. Call box near Rushmore MN (extreme sw MN.)  Track is still used by the Minnesota Southern Railway, maybe twice a week.  I couldn't open the door on the call box.

2.  Elevator siding at Stockholm, SD.  This is the BNSF line from Watertown SD to Appleton MN.  It sees maybe four trains a week?  About the only customer is an ethanol plant at Watertown.  The elevator in Stockholm is tiny and has been abandoned for decades.

3. Nassau MN, at the South Dakota/Minnesota state line.  Same tracks as above.

4. The old CMStP branch line to Platte SD, taken at Geddes SD.  The rail is 60 pound, minted in 1883, laid down here in 1900.  Once the passenger and cattle business went away in the 1950s, the fate of the Platte line was sealed.  Abandoned since at least the 1980s, but the tracks and switches are still in place.

5. BNSF grain train between Canton and Lennox SD, on the Mitchell Sub.  This line ends up running near my home and sees three or four trains per day.

That's probably enough.  Hope at least one was interesting.
