Soooo, I saw this listed in the O section on ebay for $20 and decided to take a chance since I'm a PRR nut... Seller says he thinks it has a bad gear and maybe a bad board. Looks like it is from 2005 or so. Does anyone have any experience with this loco or newer versions? Are there know issues with the gear box? I guess I'll have some more questions once it shows up as I do not have DCC or any of that stuff. I figured it was worth $20 even if it needs some fixing.
"HONGZ" stands for HO scale, N scale, G scale, and Z scale.
Post your non-O scale stuff here!

Wow, nice buy. I believe you may have stole it, even if it needs a new board.
Sometimes, people don't know how to use them. You may get very lucky!
Thanks Joe, I'm hoping so. I'm hoping it still has the extra axle with traction tires either installed or in the box. Am I right in thinking the DCS these ho engine's run on is the same as the O DCS? Maybe that is a dumb question. I would think it is the same.
Run on DC only! that maybe what happened to it?
Make sure there's no short before you apply power.
these will run on AC, DC, DCC or DCS which is AC. The problems with these from 2004-2005 is that mth no longer makes parts for them. We looked into buying one only to be told that parts are no longer there for it. This was the first run of proto 3.0 boards, it was a shame because the whistle on these was just beautiful and the smoke was great.
"CAUTION: M.T.H. HO engines DO NOT OPERATE ON AC VOLTAGE. Applying AC power to your locomotive could cause permanent damage and will void your warranty."
This is from the owners manual.
BTW, DCS runs on DC too. It's just that it can use AC also. I have run with both. This early loco was DC only.
When you use the TIU with DC voltage going in, you can only use the 2 fixed channels of the TIU.
I have the DAP version of this engine. I run mine on DCC using an NCE Pro Cab and love it. Like others have mentioned the whistle sounds great and mine smokes like a brush fire.
