I picked up this item for a good price. The seller said the PS 2 isn’t working. I wasn’t interested in all PS2 goodies for a tinplate engine. All I need is electronic reverse with a horn a bell. What would the best product be?

Dallee electronics makes an electronic reverse unit and conventional sound systems that should work for you.
Another vote for the Dallee unit.
Would another option be swapping in a prewar motor to repace the can motor block?

I will never miss open frame motors. I will gladly trade the nostalgia for a quiet, smooth, and 100% maintenance free experience that you get with the can motor.

It’s arriving tomorrow. I’ll have to take a look at what’s inside.
I converted a few of the Williams Reproduction units that came with dummy motors. Used a modified reproduction MTH open frame 260E motor. Worked well.

To the best of my knowledge all can motors are DC ONLY!!!
Don't apply AC to them......they hate it!!
On the other hand, an "open frame" motor (armature and stater coil) can run on both AC and DC without too much trouble, although the magnetic field for the reverse unit my become weak over time, if running on DC only.

Thanks I thought it was DC just wanted to be sure.
You better unplug the motor or any other item you're going to test with straight DC. Otherwise, you risk damaging the Board. G

Thanks for that! I knew that the Proto 2 wasn’t working; there is no response in conventional either.
This engine is completely dead; no response after charging it for 24 hours and trying a reset.
The PS-2 3V boards can be repaired depending on the damage. Worth having it check out. G
