Just want to make sure I don't screw up -- looking to replace batteries ( not ready for BCR yet ) -- in my 20-3116-1 Virginian. The instruction book says "2 - 1.5v rechargeable batteries" -- which apparently turns into MTH part # 50-1024 -- 2.4V "blue battery" --- is this the right battery and part number ? I tried the MTH parts on line and the exploded parts piece is not available. Wanting to make sureI don't smoke something I don't want to !!!

No, Your engine is the first PS-2 3V engines and the direction manual shows the individual AA cells. Frankly, you can go to Wal-Mart and pick up any 1.2V AA rechargeable battery and use them. You need two.
The later engines used the 2.4V AA single assembly. That comes with a molex connector, so I am not sure it would be a direct fit for your engine. Have you opened the tender and looked at the batteries? G
Thanks !!! I will pull the tender apart tonight !! Now for a "dumb and dumber" question --- if it's a "3V systsem" why is the battery total 2.4 V ? I guess the same thing applies to the 9V system that is an 8.4V battery -- why the 0.6V offset ?
There is no 9V, it is a 5V system that uses a 5V processor and the 3V a 3 V processor, but both also have 5V microchips to control. The 9V was a common battery used on PS-1 so I guess they designed it to use it.
For the 3V boards, the 2.4V battery is boosted with an inductor circuit to provide 5VDC to run the 5V microchips and source the 3.3V DC regulator that runs the processor. Again a design decision I guess.
While an alkaline battery is 9V or 2 1.5V, when you get into the rechargeable batteries they are 1.2V for a cell. So 2 cells gives 2.4V and 7 cells gives 8.4V.
Too much info huh:-) G
