It's been a long time since I've even had a local shop. But, my son has decided to start dabbling in HO, and I don't even know where to start looking.
Mail order is fine. Least expensive for the best quality of course, but willing to pay if service is there.
In the market for modern Norfolk Southern, DCC and sound equipped. Unit train of modern dump hoppers for a start.

For a local shop, where are you located?
For mail order, try Trainworld. I have no connections with them, but have ordered from them and their prices are good and seem to have good service. Lots of HO.

Local Hobbytown in Knoxville and branch in Nashville, TN (865) 337-8094 had on shelf's last week modern NS Power and Hoppers. On the shelf was Atlas, Athearn, Walthers, and Bachmann NS DCC/Sound units (SD60,ES44, GP38, F units, SD40, etc). The owner is a motivated and is knowledgeable train guy. If you call ask for Gary and if he is out as for Angela who will get you a quick return call.
