Hi all,
My new Lionel Legacy PRR J1a does not make any idling sounds. The engine will only make the bell and whistle sound. Additionally the cylinder drain smoke effect doesn’t work at all. I tried reprogramming the engine to no avail. Anyone have an idea on what to do?

Did you try raising the ancillary sounds by pushing AUX1, then volume up?
Max, if your sure the volume isn't somehow turned all the way down. You might try doing a reset of all the electronic boards. I had a newer legacy engine do something similar after experiencing a short on the layout we were running on.

Yes it did. Looking into getting the sound board replaced.

FWIW, the "tooter" whistle is prototypical for that locomotive. It's not super difficult to change the board for a different steam board, but of course you do have to buy the new board. 
Yea but this is not right whistle I have videos at home with these running and big difference
Not trying to start a whole argument on what whistle is accurate. Just asking a simple question which has now been answered.
No argument just facts , hope you got good deal on it if you gotta throw another board in it. No biggie
