Oil derricks that run continually do not use the bi-metal strip. I use both kind on my layout. For some reason the ones with the bi-metal strip bubble better . Both use the same type of bulb.
There might be a fine point 3rd option, at least a few modern (like 1990's era)units used a 555 timer chip on a circuit board.
The operation visually was probably identical to the strip versions though, just electronically controlled pulses rather than the strip heating and cooling down.
