Is it 2-rail or 3-rail? Manufacturer? Model number? Is there anything more you can tell us about it? Did it come with track? Pictures?
It will need either AC or DC. Try AC first, at low voltage, say, 6 volts, and see if the motor turns. Then try DC. Use test leads, with the loco on its side. It might have a universal motor, in which case it will run on either.
Once you determine what it likes, just provide the appropriate supply. Keep us posted.
kinda funny you just posted this. I was just offered today to buy a OO set # 0090 from a widow. It will be a first 00 for me. It has a #0100 transformer. 120 volts AC
I would try DC first. If whatever this is has a DC motor, won't trying AC first just ruin it? Just asking...

If you end up getting it, please post photos...

will do. I won't be picking it up for a couple weeks, when I get the chance to run to the town it's in. Pics show it to be a bit dirty but the engine had been wrapped and looks remarkably nice. The paper it's wrapped in is from 1959. It will come with extra baggage though. Some N scale and HO. But I can sell or give that away. But.....If I'm seeing correctly, there just may be a B&O 2368 F3 I see under some of the 00 cars. Also, I see a 350 transfer table in original box. We'll find out.
Lionel OO both 2 and 3 rail, runs on AC, Scalecraft runs on DC. Others?? Likely DC as well.

Lionel OO locomotives can also run on DC, provided it doesn't have a whistle tender. Otherwise the tender whistle will blow continuously. Again this assumes the OP's question is about Lionel OO trains.
Friends, thank you all of your great advice. I will follow what you have offered.
