I posted on another thread how I solve the paint match problem, but it's worth a repeat.

Take the car that is already the color you want to an automotive paint store.  Not an auto parts store that also sells paint, but a dedicated auto paint store.  (Body shop supply store).  They have a machine to match that paint spot on.  I've done it on both Lionel and MTH silver passenger cars.  The store can mix up whatever kind of paint you prefer, acrylic, enamel, lacquer, etc.  They can adjust drying time and gloss.  BTW: those passenger cars aren't totally high gloss; they are a little dull.  they can make up a rattle can of that color (about $18).  I've used this method on vehicles, furniture, model trains; just about anything that gets painted.

Trying to figure it out by hit or miss can be expensive and you will probably never get it exactly right.  Just do what the pro's do.  My 2 cents anyways.
