California Zephyr rolling out of Paradise behind WP GS-64 #485.

Scott: Really like your WP GS pulling your lighted WP dome passenger cars. Also like the red marker lights on the back of the tender AND after the train passes, revealing the red lit tail lights of what appears to be a Greyhound Silversides bus back there.

Excellent video clip. 👍

Vern, thanks, glad you liked the video. The GS-64 does look awesome pulling the Zephyr cars! That Greyhound Silversides bus is a MTH that I added headlights and taillights to about a year or so ago. I posted the Greyhound bus light install in the "What did you do on your layout today thread", I'll see if I can find it and share it with you if you're interested. I figure it goes well in this thread, as the bus is at a passenger terminal, and it carries train passengers. ;-)

Wow Scott. The front and back of your Silversides looks great with the lights. You don’t have to find your other post on my account, as I’m not so good at installations, so I’ll just leave my Scenicruiser dark. But thank you. 🙏

I love what I’ve seen of your layout and trains and look forward to more awesome posts. 👍

Perhaps a more prototypical California Zephyr.

Just a quick California Zephyr excursion around Paradise, CA. Imagine the California Zephyr being pulled by Western Pacific F7 ABA #918 set leaving from Paradise, CA, then around Butt Valley Lake, through the town of Oroville, around the James Horseshoe, up the Feather River Canyon, over Oroville Lake, around Williams Loop, over the Keddie Wye, and on to Portola, CA. Once we arrive at the Western Pacific Railroad Museum at Portola, the Zephyr turns around in a loop at the Museum and returns to Paradise via the same route! What a great ride that would be!

The big fantasy part of the excursion would be Paradise, CA to Oroville, CA, as there ain't no railroad between those two cities! However, there is a railroad between Oroville and Portola, it's owned and operated by Union Pacific, and BNSF has trackage rights. Unfortunately, I've never been on a train through the Feather River Canyon, but I have driven through it dozens of times on Highway 70.

Scott: Now that’s certainly the California Zephyr all right! A beautiful train and thanks for sharing.

I’m unfamiliar with the route you described, having not been through there. It’s sad that most of the town of Paradise was destroyed by the devastating Camp Fire in late 2018. I also understand that Lake Oroville is way down, due to the extended drought.

On a more pleasant note, it would be fun to design and operate a layout modeled after the fantasy route you described from Paradise to Oroville back in better days. It would be awesome to somehow work the beautiful Feather River Canyon into it as well.

Hey, there you go Scott, your next project. 😄

Thanks, Scott.  Please provide a link to your thread and thanks for doing so.

MTH PS3 New Haven diesels hauling Williams New Haven passenger cars along the CT coast line:

The water is thanks to the YouTube of Marklin of Sweden: Toilet Paper + White Glue = Realistic Water. I also used green foam (1 inch thick), acrylic paint and several coats of Mod Podge. Arnold

Arnold - very nice video!  Love the look of your water!!  Great job    Also are the ALCO FA locos Lionel products?

WP2217 Great Video.  Cars appear to be 15" K-Line, correct?  What are the locomotives? Thanks.

Hello, Mainline, thanks for the compliment! Yes, those are California Zephyr K-Line 15" aluminum Dome Cars with baggage car. I changed the incandescent lighting to LED and completely upgraded the interior and added more passengers. I posted the upgrades I did in the "What did you do on your layout" thread.

Here's a link to my first post on the interior upgrades of the K-line observation car if you're interested.

The Western Pacific F7 ABA set is Lionel from the 2008 catalog 6-34513. The snow plows on this set are a nice touch, and they can be removed.

Dallas Joseph - thank you for the complement on my Lionel 248 and cars...glad you enjoyed the post.  Arnold - your layout looks really great, better each time you show us some more of it.  The water is really neat for sure.  Those NH diesels and the heavyweight cars really show it off.

Best wishes

Don

Thanks Don, the water was a real gun project.

Hello all, since my layout is small, and I've never videoed the whole layout before, I thought I'd show a couple of videos of the layout while running passenger trains. I've got the Southern Pacific Daylight being pulled by #4415 GS-2, California Zephyr being pulled by Western Pacific F7's #918A, B, and D, and The Santa Fe Chief being pulled by F3's #18A and B.

First video is during the daylight hours. I usually just do night videos, so I've got both this time. If you get bored, just fast forward the video, they are about 5 minutes each. Note: It's just me running the trains and switches with my Cab2 and keeping a very close eye on switches!!!

Here's at night.

Happy Railroading!

@WesternPacific2217, thanks; really nice job.

Suggestion:  I enjoyed your video of the CZ pulled by the WP F units; but, it'd be even better if you or a buddy could add more cars with the same shiny extrusions to the consist--5 or 6 cars are great; but, 10-12 would be awesome.

In any case thanks for the link and the video.

Hi Carl, I think 12 15" cars would probably fill up my outer loop! LoL It would be fun though! One of these days I'd like to add a couple aluminum 15" cars without the dome, like maybe a dining car and/or a sleeper. I've got an eye out for them, might have to be Lionel though, I haven't seen matching K-Line dinner/sleeper cars yet online. I haven't been able to find K-line archived catalogs online either. I'll keep searching though. Glad you liked the video, thanks!

Well, I’m still learning how to do videos, but it’s a slow go, but I ran this train today. There’s a lot of beautiful passenger trains on this thread, it’s amazing. Happy Railroading Everyone

Larry, the video looks great, lighting is good, not to bright or dark. Well done, you've got it! :-) You keep showing that beautiful Santa Fe Warbonnet ABBA #22 set, I really like that set!

I use my iPhone for most of my videos and photos! Occassionally I'll use my Canon 1080p video camera, but not very often as it's big and clumsy. I do use a tripod for most of my videos though, I only have two hands. Here's my tripod with iPhone adapter. It's reasonably inexpensive and works for other photo opportunities other than the train layout. I also have a remote to shoot photos and start and stop the video that came with the iPhone adapter.

The "Golden State" running at the OCSMR. First pic shows it before the 2nd A unit developed issues...

20220607_185128

Next shows it actually running.

1st A unit is a K-line "trailing" A unit that I came across a while back, with motors, but no electronics. Added a DC Commander and E8 Railsounds. 2nd A unit was a Weaver Santa Fe unit that had drive issues. I repainted, and fixed the issues with the gears on one of the trucks (other seemed to be working at the time). Under load, the other set of trucks started locking up, so I'll have to do the same "fix" I did on the first one and see how it goes. 8 car Golden State consist, only missing the 2nd dome car (which the "Golden State" didn't actually have).

The modern locomotives with speed control and all of the bells and whistles are wonderful in my opinion, but sometimes I like to go back to Postwar basics.

This video shows the classic Lionel NY Central ABA F3s made in the early 1950s (I forget the number).  The dual motor powered front F3 is geared down, still has good Magnetraction, so it is an excellent puller, and runs relatively slow and smooth compared to many other Postwar engines. The horizontal dual motors make a growling sound, which is another big plus IMO.

With geared down speed and growling sounds, it's almost like a modern engine with speed control and Protosounds.

The locomotives are pulling one of my best sets of modern passenger cars: K-Line 15 inch NY Central Pullman green Madison cars:

Scott (WP2217)  Thanks for the Information on the WP F-7 Set and also the interior upgrades.

As for flat top cars K-Line 15" ESE cars used the same extrusion and were finished the same way as the 15" CZ cars.  If you ignore the letterboards they look great together. Its my railroad and I will run it the way I want, so my ESE has dome cars cut in at Albany to run to the west.  Domes behind a streamlined Hudson make one awesome train.  I know this is practical because I road the Lakeshore Ltd from NY City to Chitown in 1994 and that is how Amtrak operated the train.  The dome was cut in when the Boston section met the NY City section at Albany.  Have pictures of it taken on 35mm film.  Need to scan them in some day.

The reason I mention this as the only 15" K-Line CZ cars in addition to the Dome 4 Pac I believe were the baggage you have and a diner.  Problem with the ESE was it was a day train, however the good news is in the 1960's a flat top coach was added to the CZ consist.  Also you wouldn't be out of line to add a PRR Sleeper.  Both of these are readily available on the used market.

BTW currently a WP 15" Prospector Set is available with a $200 starting bid, these aren't super common, if you don't already have one.  I really don't need to buy that set so please tell me you are going to go for it so I won't.  LOL - Jim

Jim, you and I think alike. I just made an offer on a K-Line 15" ECE Diner. I'm also looking at a K-line 15" ECE flat top aluminum passenger car. I could, with not much effort, change the nameplates(letterboards) on the cars. The nameplates are held on with small rivets/nails that are easy to remove, as I found out when updating the interiors of my 15" cars.

Please feel free to go for the Prospector set

Thanks for the information!!!
