Arnold @Arnold D. Cribari I noted your comment above on passenger car length.  Have you tried the Lionel 2400 series streamlined passenger cars?  I just measured mine and they are about 11" long and I run mine on my 0-31 layout with 022 switches with no problems.  They came in 3 colors post war (silver, yellow and green although the yellow ones are 50th anniversary cars and are somewhat rare) and the silver ones came in several detail variations (stripes etc).  Now I know from our "roll out the MPC" thread that you do not normally go to MPC but they did re-issue these cars in a rather wide variety of liveries, including the grey NYC scheme.

Don

Don, I have the 2400 series postwar passenger cars with the names on NJ cities and towns on them, and they run beautifully on my sharp curves.

What I would love is that size passenger cars with New York Central on them, in heavyweight Madison car style, and in the drab gray-green color of the passenger cars that ran on The Put.

Arnold, I think these MTH 60' cars would be ideal for your Put:

30-69088 | MTH ELECTRIC TRAINS (mthtrains.com)
30-69090 | MTH ELECTRIC TRAINS (mthtrains.com)

The cars in the classic pullman green and do not have any names, they are just numbered.

Bryce

Bryce, you have found what I am looking for. Thanks my friend. Arnold

Arnold;

Here is another possible option... Forum Sponsor Nicholas Smith has them - according to the Lionel 2016 catalog, they are 13” long and run on O-31 curves.

Thanks, Paul, but that set is not the specific set that I want. The passenger cars I want need to be models of the passenger cars on The Put, which were Pullman green (a drab green-gray color).

I just posted my interest on the Wanted to Buy forum. Arnold

I’ve been seeing some amazing layouts from you guys. Even if I had ample space for a huge layout, I’m afraid I just don’t have the imagination it takes to create these works of art you guys are producing. My bench top is only 115 sq ft. So it did not leave much room for multiple layers. Like I told my ex wife, it may be small, but it pleases me🤪.

Farmerjohn, amazing train, and fantastic layout. Thanks for posting. I’m getting ready to make up my NYC Heavyweight set, with my Rebuilt K-Kine Hudson pulling the passengers. Although it’s an older Lionel set, it will be upgraded to LED Lighting soon. I’m staying with the silhouettes as the train will be seen from a distance. I'm posting pics of two PRR mail trains, but each has a passenger car on the end. The first includes three Weaver clerestory roof B60s, is pulled by a K-line K4s, the second is pulled by an Atlantic which includes one Weaver clerestory roof B60, but a Lionel round roof with slotted windows will be added.  Eventually I will run all the cars together as one train without the second RPO. Like this super thread.

Edit: oops. Two b60s and one b70 in the first train.

Larry, are you just replacing the bulbs or installing new LED strips?

EDIT:  The following is Pingman's text...

My club has a donated set of 10 scale K-Line heavyweight silhouette-style NYC passenger cars with 4 incandescent bulbs per car.  Consequently it rarely is run on our traveling or permanent layouts due to its high amperage draw.

This morning I began the process of converting them to LED's using GRJ's designed regulator by opening a typical coach car.

2.26.2022 NYC 22.26.2022 NYC 1

The regulator and strip LED's were installed and tested.  Lessons learned:  use electrical tape to cover the PCB and contacts mounted to the ceiling in order to lay the strip to the end of the car, and avoid creating a dark area at the car end; and, snip the wires to, and remove the four bulb holders because, if left in place, they cast shadows detracting from even lighting in the car.

I'll post a thread showing the work and components when I complete the next car.

Passenger Car question for the group. If you had a 7 or 8 car 70ft passenger car consist which is supposed to take 042 curves (3 rail, high rail wheels), and there is a through track configuration:

  • How long would you make a passenger station?
  • How long would you make a passenger terminal?

While a thru multiple track terminal might be ideal, if it had to be dead ended:

  • How many cars could you back into the terminal before there would be derailing problems?
  • Since you would also have to back into the terminal through a curve would 042 be OK, or would you need to plan for a much larger curve?

Would there be any operational differences between diesels or steamers? And would there be a difference between Madison heavy weight (3 wheel trucks) and lightweight (2 wheel trucks) cars?

@Bill Webb and I had this question posed on another thread. This seemed like the best place for answers / suggestions / opinions

As an aside - for my future layout - I am considering having an island/peninsula multi track dead-end terminal, with access through a wye. On exit I could go either direction, but would have to back in through the wye. Or this could be a lower level along a long wall.  I can easily run my long consist through switches going forward, but haven't really considered a long back-up.
