I really liked the episode, including the non-train material.
As for the value, that's actually quite accurate according to most of the value guides I've read for the 402 and three passenger cars ($1200-$1400). Overall, Corey and Chum got a decent deal.
Nice set!!
I saw that show too. As expected, that lazy Chum did not help the guy set it up. It was a nice old set.

Well, I lost a bet to the wife. I bet her lunch to day that this would be on the forum last night as we watched it yesterday. That's OK as I always enjoy having lunch with her, lol. Not being a tinplate guy, I was hoping to find out if they got a good deal on it. Appears so. Thanks for posting the information, Thomas.
I missed this one. I see most of them and also see a lot of reruns so I will be looking for the rerun. Thanks for the heads up.
(EDIT) It is their 2013 Christmas show... Titled 'Another Christmas Story'. They appear to be repeating a marathon of Christmas shows from the past four years but this episode will play 9AM Pacific on 12/25.
That was a good episode. Thanks for the heads up.
It'll be showing again tonight at 10PM EST.
At least they shouldn't take a huge loss on that set like the American Pickers did
Yes lt is on right now on DirecTV CH 268
MTH offers some reasonably priced reproduction Lionel tinplate, such as the Bild-A-Loco kits. However, the majority of my tinplate is Lionel Classics series which are decently priced, such as the Hiawatha and 44 Freight Set. All are quite nice.
Love pawn stars...I know it's scripted , but they're funny and you learn the value of other collectibles. Love the 402 segment. Wish I had a tinplate!
The set is early Standard gauge with #10 trucks. The 402 engine is a 408 without extra trim. This was the top of the line in the early 20s.
The shows on right now. Waiting to see it run.
I'd pay $1,000 for that! Since I don't watch Pawn Stars ... do they follow up and show when it sells and for how much?

Here is a newer version of the set. This one has 6 wheel trucks and looks better. Still sits too high but not as bad as the #10 truck.
Send a copy of this show to Mike and Frank at "American Pickers" for Christmas!
BTW, IMO I think the Harrison's paid retail for that set.

Thanks for the link to the set. It was listed at $1,450 on Duh bay. Thanks again and Merry Christmas.
I was actually thinking that the price Corey paid was a reasonable "street price", but I've actually noticed them do that on a lot of items. Like they say, it only takes one person to come in and want it, and pay full price guide price.
I liked the episode too, nice price for the set. At least it was way better then the episode on American Pickers where they bought the engine and cars for an arm and a leg then lost money on the set at auction.

IMHO, the values they and the various "treasure hunting" shows put on collectables are often inflated. I used to like Pawn Stars and Storage Wars, but I find that I've lost interest.
Sets like that are very common and in really nice true excellent shape sit on tables at $1200. That loco was rough, very poor paint, and lots of dents. They claimed the wheels were original, they are not, they have been replaced. The small accessories were all chipped up and in poor condition. Cory paid $1000 and that was high end retail. Way too much. He'll need a real pigeon to come in and over pay for it.

Thanks for posting. Just to own a train that old would be nice. I don't have a clue as to the real value.

I was amazed Cory even paid the 1000.00. Usually he low balls everyone badly. That set had the transformer and a few accessories and the track.

Thanks for posting the pictures. When I was watching the show the other night, I thought the seller looked familiar. I have a STD gauge customer that stops in the store once in a while that looks very similar to him. I'm sure they are different people though!

Micheal, I am with you. I think the $1000 was more like a high street price for that particular set. If the shop was going to make a good return I would have thought they would have offered $500 to 700.
Thanks K.C. For posting the link. I was able to view that whole episode this morning, before all the babies woke up and started loading down the airways!!! It was most enjoyable and you helped make an old dude's day!!
Merry Christmas
