I'm sure all the locomotive running gear is exactly the same for the entire production, so any of the versions could have the similar issue.

100% agree John. I do know that the L1's were interesting because some out of the box seemed to be fine for about two-three minutes. Others did not show any symptoms for a fair amount of running time. I don't know how or why that would be the case though because it is the same exact design. It's not like we're talking about a Northern and a Consolidation and one having troubles.

The only thing that I would think would mask it for a bit would be if someone added a good amount of grease in the gearbox off the bat. Even then though it wouldn't fix the problem, and eventually it would start talking loudly.

My I1 has been running well for a couple of weeks. The gearbox is much quieter out of the box than my L1.

* One thing to note for those that bought these. On mine wire slack going to the i.r. sensor  on the tender is at a premium.*

I took the tender shell off and moved things around a bit which included unplugging the track sensor wires to route them behind the i.r. wires.

Not a big deal, just something to check. It's only an issue when the loco is making a left turn as that's when it uses up the slack.

Aside from the  shortcomings already addressed regarding the small motor and gearbox. I do like this engine as it breaks up the monotony of my multiple 8 drivered engines. The DGLE is much better and most notably the graphite on the smokebox may be Lionels darkest ever, a huge plus IMO.

I'll add my report. Received today #4521 with the short/standard tender.  Put it on the track and gave it a push test. The wheels rolled with little resistance foreward and backwards...good sign! Turned it upside down and oiled the axles, added 2ml of grease into the grease port. Again, these gearboxes seem very roomy.

Put on track, did the programming and it runs great! Smooth as silk foreward and backwards with a 15 car train. Navigates my O54 curves just fine. These are the widest curves on my layout. Sounds are similar but not exactly the same as the L1. The 5 bells are a different selection, and the whistles are the same, except the #5 sounds closer to a N&W hooter than the #5 on the L1 to my ear.

The color is very nice. Much closer to DLGE than L1, but still maybe just a shade too green. Very forgivable. Attached are pictures. In normal lighting the colors look nearly the same. With flash enabled, the difference is striking.

Details are great, probably better than the L1 considering there's more going on. The boiler is indeed fatter than the L1, and it sits just a bit higher. The deck height on the cab and tender both match. I wish it had a deck plate. This would have not been possible on the L1 as the deck heights were mismatched. Also interesting to note, the smokebox door opens.

There's a video on YouTube somewhere that shows the short tender version navigating O48 Fastrack and it seems to work fine.

Just because you " can", doesn't mean you should.

See my post above, about about the i.r. wires going to the drawbar. I think anyone cramming these around o48 will be asking for trouble down the road.

Most folks are only concerned with whether or not an engine derails on a tighter radius. The bigger issue is the unseen damage to wires stretched or rubbing causing a short.

They are determined, ….huh buddy? ….heck we’re getting way down on the FEF thread,….I suppose soon it’ll navigate 90 degree Marx track shortly……🤣🤣🤣

I agree with this. I personally wouldn't risk it. But the video shows it is possible. They do list minimum curves for a reason.
